| demosthenes's Full Review: Red Herring Magazine |
Always one of the hardest business and technology mags to track down in the bookstore as copies seem to vanish off the stands. Knowing how hard I hunt for it every month, my housemates got me a subscription for Christmas.
Red Herring leads the ubiquitous pack of mags glanced at by trendy internet execs everywhere - including The Industry Standard, Silicon Valley Reporter and Digital Coast Weekly, Upside Today and others.
Not only do I now subscribe to the magazine but I also get their daily e-newsletters which are nearly always thoughtprovoking and informative. Both the mag and the website are worth spending time looking at.
The features are generally substantive and well-written and researched with lots to sink your teeth into over the month until the next issue arrives. The January 2000 issue is worth every penny paid at the newsstand just for the thoughtful cover story "For Love or Money?" examining the current lack-of-longevity ethic at most internet startups as people concentrate on cashing in quick instead of building a company that lasts. Another substantive feature, "Ten Stocks for the New Century," isn't merely a litany of stocks suggested in a one page pass, but rather a comprehensive article examining each suggested company and analyzing its growth potential.
Because of the substance and number of articles, columns, and blurbs, paging through the ads never feels as ponderous as it does in other publications. No wonder this disappears off the newsstands every month, it's a great magazine. If you cannot find it this month, check out the website, subscribe to one of the newsletters, and then pounce when the next issue hits the stands.
