Road and Track- Wider isn't always better..
Written: Jan 18 '02 (Updated Jun 29 '05)
Pros:Wide format, In-depth articles
Cons:Too many advertisements, Could use some more of those excellent photo shots.
The Bottom Line: Although way too many advertisements, this is A magazine that offers excellent pictures, stories, and reviews.
I subscribed to Road and Track about 6 months ago, initially wanting to subscribe only to 'Car and Driver' magazine, I ended up subscribing to 2 other magazines, Motor Trend, and Road and Track.
I had never purchased, nor seen an issue of 'Road and track' in the store, so I was amazed on how wide the format was. At first I found the size to be very annoying, and seemed to me like a cheap ploy for Road and Track to segregate themselves from the rest of the magazines on the market. Until I actually compared the photos in Road and Track to photos in my other car magazines did I realize why Road and Track was so wide. I guess Pontiac was right when they say 'Wider is better.' There are not as many photos in my Road and Track issues as there are in some of the others car magazines, but the photos you get are awesome, 'Best in it class' as some car reviewers would say.
About Road and Tracks Editors: Some are young , some are old, some are women! Thats right, Road and Track has a female production editor, by the name of Jerilyn Jeffery. Too bad she is not a tester, oh well. Road and Track I'm available if you need me :)
It's a sad fact, but when you first open this magazine, of course the first few pages are going to be advertisements. In my February issue there was an advertisement on Mens shampoo? Come on.. Is there no women that read this magazine? I thought for a second, and realized how silly it would look for a womens shampoo Ad to be in a car magazine, but still it's just not right! Anyway check this out, there were 68 full pages of advertisements in my February issue!! There are only 138 total pages, and 68 of them are advertisements! Those specs are worse than this Months 'Car and Driver' issue. Anyway read, or just breeze past the Ads and you'll get some great photos and some entertaining info.
Smack Dab in the middle of the magazine is where you will find the pot of 'car review gold'. Don't get me wrong, there are a few reviews before the middle of the magazine, but the ones in the middle are the ones with the huge photos, and all the specs!! Unfortunately there are only like 3 or 4 of these kind of reviews. But the reviews are so in-depth, and so well done, that each car gets around 5-10 pages each! Road and Track magazine really does an excellent job with these reviews. Sometimes past history of the car is given, huge Photos of the car's exterior and interior are always given, all specs are given, performance, warranty's, price, suspension etc. are all included. The Reviews given by 'Road and Track' are excellent. The cars they do reviews on are a little impractical most of the time, and sometimes unavailable to the public in the United States, but the information on each car surpasses in 'quality' that of the car reviews in 'Car and Driver' or Motor Trend magazines. After you read these 3 or 4 excellent reviews, it's all downhill. After a few more reviews, photos slowly cease to exist, and then you are back in the Ads.
NOTE: They call it the 'AUTO GALLERY,' but the last 5 pages are classified Ads for cars. Also after page 100 you can bet your bottom dollar the advertisements are going to start rolling in so hard that you'll think you were watching MTV.
The price for 'Road and Track' will set you back around 3.99 if you buy an issue individually. A 1 year subscription of 12 issues will run you around 10 dollars. You don't have to be a mathematician to see that you save quite a bit with the yearly subscription.
NOTE#2, and conclusion: Once you get past the Ads, this is a great magazine, I will be subscribing to this magazine again.
