"Viva la Scooter!" - Scoot! Magazine for the Scooter Enthusiast

Oct 7, 2010
Review by
Rated a Very Helpful Review

Pros:U.S. based scooter publication dedicated to all things scooter

Cons:Lots of ads, but that's how they make their money

The Bottom Line: Scooter enthusiast? Interested in becoming one? Check out Scoot! magazine.

I am a scooter guy. Seriously, I recently slapped a good chunk of cash down for a Genuine Roughhouse 50, and now you can see me zipping around downtown Colorado Springs, heading for specific destinations, or merely joyriding. Scooters are a blast, and they’re fuel efficient (often getting upwards of 80-100 miles a gallon.) However, I can’t ride my scooter all day, everyday (I’m not exactly enamored with rush hour traffic yet.) So what does a scooter guy do during his downtime? Well, I read about scooters and other scooter enthusiasts, for one thing. Santa Clara, CA-based Scoot! magazine aids me in that endeavor.

Scoot! is published bi-monthly (six issues for $24.95 in the U.S.) and is the only U.S. scooter publication available at my local dealer (that’s not to say that it’s the only U.S. pub, but it’s the only one that I’m aware of.) It is a magazine that’s all a go-go about all things scooterific and, as such, is one fun read.

Despite the fact that there are seemingly a thousand ad’s per issue—ranging the gamut from scooters to scooter-centric clothing and products--Scoot! also has a lot of content to offer it’s readership.

Each issue sees the staff reviewing three or so new scooters, for instance. These reviews are extremely thorough—consisting of a lengthy review of features and likes/dislikes, a specification section which breaks down the nuts and bolts (MSRP, tire sizes, length, etc,) and a quick and dirty thumbs up/down: “vintage style,” “cool accessories,” “center stand too low.” Each review is also enhanced by numerous photographs of various angles of the bike itself and close ups of the controls and speedometers (in fact, every article in Scoot! is adorned with a good-sized portion of photos.)

You’ll also get monthly updates on scooter rallies from around the country (yes, local scooter clubs hold Sturgis-style rallies in scooter-friendly cities,) and features on reader’s custom or rebuilt scooters, which are something to behold. Just pick up a copy of the October 2009 issue and check out Chris Irvin’s 1962 Vespa GS160, which is absolutely gorgeous.

Of course, each issue has a feature, as is the case with all magazines. Speaking of the October 2009 issue, readers were treated to a feature on the straight edge punk band Rise Against, the members of which haul their scooters around on tour and ride the various cities they visit before shows. June 2010 shows off scooter-themed artwork from around the world (“The Art of Scoot!”) as that issue’s main feature, offering up not only some nifty art, but quick bios on the artists and why they were drawn to scooters as a theme.

In the meantime, Scoot! offers up product reviews (everything from helmet wipes to handlebar locks to rain jackets) to a calendar of upcoming scooter events in North America. Not to mention, the Letters to the Editor section is a nice touch. While the mag only prints a small handful of letters each issue, Editor April Whitney answers each one in a thoughtful manner.

Scoot! magazine is a great way for scooter enthusiasts to immerse themselves into scooter culture. Whether you’re looking for information on an upcoming purchase, ideas for next year’s scooter rally, or just wanting to read all about scootering in general, this is a magazine that’s well worth your time. Even if you choose not to subscribe, the $5.95 newsstand price is fairly affordable, making it easy and convenient to keep up with the scooter world. Scootering is groovy.  Get down to your local dealer and pick up an issue today, and see just how groovy it can be.
