Soaps in Depth is a great find for those of us who are either dedicated to only one soap, or who are loyal to the soaps on a particular channel. (Obviously, if you like NBC or CBS soaps, you should buy the appropriate editions! I'm not 100% sure, but I think they do follow the same format). I occasionally buy ABC Soaps in Depth to get the lowdown on General Hospital, which I watch regularly, and Port Charles, which is not shown by my affiliate, but which has crossovers to General Hospital. I've also been known to browse the articles about One Life to Live and All My Children, both to see if I'm missing something better and to check out actors that were once on "my" show.
The articles in this magazine are of about the same depth as those of Soap Opera Digest; they are far superior to the nearly useless Soap Opera Update. Each issue features several pages of late-breaking soap news, details of who's coming and going and why, previews and spoilers, and articles dedicated to each particular ABC soap. The editors of the magazine actually color code the top right portion of most of the pages to make it easy to find the soap you are interested in. I watch GH, therefore I look for gold tabs. If I only want to know about one show, this makes it the most efficient soap magazine available.
Of course, I often do get distracted by the sections devoted to other soaps. The pages are laid out attractively, with beautiful photographs of actors, both in character and as themselves. I like to see the "Now and Then" section which relates a current plot to one of the past, even if it's a show I've never seen before. Sometimes the dated clothing in the photos is just too wonderful to not share with others!
There are also a few "fun and games" pages in each magazine, often quizzes from a particular ABC soap's past (for example, putting Lucy Coe's husbands in the proper order) or a soap-specific crossword puzzle. I find these far easier to deal with than the all-encompassing crossword puzzle at Soap Opera Digest.
My only complaint about ABC Soaps in Depth, aside from the ubiquitous (at least in soap magazines) ads for ill-advised diet products, is that they don't have a lot of commentary about the quality of each show. One of my favorite columns at Soap Opera Digest is called "It's Only My Opinion," and it regularly blasts the shows for stupid mistakes. It's very fun to read this kind of editorializing, especially when soaps really can be so dumb. In this way ABC Soaps in Depth strikes me as more of a lengthy commercial for the ABC soaps.
I like this magazine and would recommend checking it out at the grocery store once in a while... but I don't feel at all tempted to subscribe, despite all the things I enjoy about it.
