Soccer America touts itself as the "America's No. 1 Soccer Magazine," and I have to agree. For fans of Major League Soccer and the U.S. national teams, this is a quality source of news.
If you're a fan of the sport, and you've looked for soccer magazines on a newsstand, you've probably noticed that there isn't much there. The coverage of soccer is generally improving, and sources such as USA Today, for example, cover soccer, but they still don't dedicate a lot of space when MLS isn't in season. Soccer America keeps you informed of all the stories that your local paper probably doesn't print.
The magazine comes out weekly and is printed tabloid style on newsprint. You won't find it on every newsstand, and you may have to dig through a pile of snowboarding and surfing mags to find it. As the title suggests, the focus is on American soccer. They cover MLS, the A-League, college and pretty much any other league in this country. They dedicate lots of space (relatively speaking) to the U.S. national teams, both men's and women's, and this is what draws me to the magazine.
While American soccer gets the lion's share of the coverage, Soccer America does cover international teams and leagues. They list league standings and results, but if you're looking for more in-depth international coverage, you're better off checking the Internet or looking for World Soccer magazine.
Each week columnist Paul Gardner spouts off about the state of the game. He is extremely opinionated and often seems angry--which makes for good reading. You'll love him or hate him, but you will read his column every week. The magazine also has an extensive list of classifieds for summer camps, tournaments, equipment--pretty much anything related to the game. They also have a Web site (http://www.socceramerica.com) that's worth visiting.
