I am a faithful reader of Sports illustrated and enjoy reading about sports. However, when I bought Sport magazine thinking I was going to get some more interesting facts, stories, profiles, etc., well, let's just say that I was deeply disappointed. The reasons are numerous and obvious.
To begin with, the magazine is full of ads. I know, what magazine is not full of ads? Somehow Sport seems to squeeze more in than most magazines and it is quite a feat since the magazine is not particularly thick in the first place. Secondly, the writing in not exactly inspiring. I breeze through Sports Illustrated in a matter of hours and always look forward to the day it arrives. With Sport magazine I found myself struggling to get through some of the articles because they were written poorly and did not contain information that I found interesting. Along the same lines, the writers are second class at Sport magazine. Maybe they are young and do not know the questions to ask, or how to write in a manner that reads easily. I do not know, nor do I care. I paid money to read a well written magazine that, hopefully, contains information that I am interested in. I get the impression that Sport hires the guys who were not able to make it through the deeper pocketed Sports Illustrated. In addition, if you read Sports Illustrated you will undoubtedly notice that many of the writers have been with the publication for years. After awhile you begin to develop a sense of how the person writes and what they write about. Somehow I doubt this is true with Sport. My final gripe with the magazine is that they attempt to convey too much of the story with pictures. I see pictures of the winning catch everyday in the newspaper and on tv. In a sports magazine I want the story!
So, in summary, I would not waste any money on Sport magazine. Spend your money on Sports illustrated and you will get the story, well written, and also develop a feel for the writers since they will be with the magazine for a long time.
