When I was a kid, I got TEEN magazine every month, and the re-subscription was one of my "stocking stuffers" every Christmas from my Mother. So, when my daughter got to the same age I was I figured TEEN magazine was a great "tradition" to keep going. I figured, what the heck, I got it when I was 12 too??
WRONG Idea!! The first magazine came, and I read through it, remembering back when I was a kid and marveling at how much it had changed since then. It wasn't until the second magazine came and my husband happened to pick it up to flip through it when he came across the section where the kids write in and ask questions and he was appalled at what had been printed in this magazine for young girls. There was a question from some 14 year old girl asking if sex was supposed to hurt all the time or just the first time. TEEN magazine wrote back telling this 14 year old kid that it was "perfectly normal" and they made it sound like being 14 and having sex was downright "Groovy and totally ok". My poor husband was speechless, and I was just appalled.
I wrote the magazine editor that very night and told them exactly what I thought their magazine had become--TRASH. I cancelled the subscription by telephone the next day, and that magazine will never come to my mailbox as long as I am alive to stop it.
