TNR provides sharp, biting, but overall witty and engaging commentary. For those who claim a liberal bias, this registered Republican questions if they have ever read any of the scathing pieces on the moral failings of former President Clinton, or the articles assailing Senate Republicans for their lack of a principled stand against China. This magazine has no set political stance; it is all over the map, with an intriguing amalgam of views found in no elected politician that I can think of offhand. The reason is that American politics and politicians are so cliched and easily categorized, that to find a Democrat who opposes partial-birth abortions or a Republican who opposes the death penalty is an exceedingly rare event. And yet this magazine provides exactly such viewpoints.
The best thing though about TNR is its undeniable sense of wit. No targets are off limits when the editors and contributors inflict their literary sting. This oomph with intelligence missing from other political magazines makes reading TNR an absolute delight, and more than once I've chuckled out loud at the zingers that ring between the margins of this publication.
