ned1's Full Review: O The Oprah Magazine Subscription
I was laughing all day when I heard that one. After trying to read the first issue of O, I can understand why she did. Oprah is so full of herself and this magazine is so bad I wouldn't even make my rabbit suffer by lining her cage with it. It's all advertisements and hardly any articles. The poor editor probably quit out of boredom for lack anything to do or edit - you can't really edit Tommy Hilfiger ads. Or maybe she quit because Oprah is such a controlling shrew that she could never drag this magazine up to a decent level. It's will have to remain the monthly Oprah love myself fest rag that it is.
What Martha Stewart did for crafting and Kathie Lee did for parenting and marriage, Oprah does for self love (hers not yours) and acceptance. Nothing, but exploit millions of women into believing that they are experts at what the preach and convincing the masses that they should buy their stuff to become more like them and better people.
This magazine has to top the list of biggest ego trips ever. Please how much money does Oprah have and how much more does she need to make herself feel better. If she was really all about self love and improving the world all proceeds from the sale of this magazine would go to women's shelters and other worthy causes. I see no claim to that effect in this magazine - in fact all the money goes to Oprah's favorite charity - herself!! She's empowering her checkbook all the way to the bank.
Was I sleeping between 1988 and the present when Oprah went back to school to get her masters and PhD in psychology or her MD in Psychiatry? I use to watch Oprah back in the 80s when her show was good. We all use to rush back to the dorm to watch GH and Oprah then head to the cafeteria for dinner. I scheduled my classes so I wouldn't miss her show. Then I grew up and she got way too preachy so I tuned out.
Has she become such an expert on how to lift up your spirits by listening to others? Can she now offer that kind of advice without actually being an expert, but by taking what experts say and putting it into her own words? She's like a snowball that won't quit. She started off small and good and then her ego kicked in and she just kept rolling along gathering more ego as she went.
I bought this magazine by mistake last week. I thought it was a gag magazine and got it to put in my hubbies Easter basket. Who wouldn't think it was a gag magazine if you never watch her show and didn't know she was launching this project. A magazine named after herself with a picture of herself on the cover - that had to be for laughs, or did it? Years back I had found a spoof of Martha Stewart's living magazine that was absolutely hysterical and I thought this would be funny in the same way. It was funny, but not in the same way.
This was funny in a sad kind of scary way. Does Oprah actually think every person in this country views her as she obviously views and loves herself? Not this little piggy. Oprah is a TV personality, not an expert on marriage, self love and life. She reads the cue cards and listens to what real experts have to offer and advise. Yes she does donate money to charity and encourages other to donate time, goods and money, but so do lots of other people - not just celebrities - and none of them seek the recognition and approval Oprah does. They just do it because it's the right thing to do. Well everyone but Kathie Lee, and I honestly don't know which one is worse - maybe Kathie Lee because she just doesn't exploit herself, but puts her kids out there as well.
So what will you get if you decide to buy O? About a million advertisements for Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, designer cosmetics and hair color. A calendar that teaches you to write a journal and to love each day. In case that's not enough she gives you handy dandy cut out inspirational cards so that when you're stuck in traffic, having a bad day or have just been rear ended by a soccer mom on a cell phone you can pull out some of Oprah's words of wisdom to help you get through.
You know, all of this wouldn't bother me so much if I honestly believed that Oprah cared about what she says and does, but every time she ventures out you get the feeling that she could care less and she looks at all of us like we're some evil simps hanging on her every word and she looks to find new ways to exploit us and take our money.
If she did care about changing the world and not her ego than the magazine may not have been called O and her picture wouldn't be all over and in it. I'll sit back and watch how this plays out and wait for the newest offering K - the Kathie Lee parenting and successful marriage magazine.
