An Indispensable Weekly Guide to New York

Written: Dec 10 '01 (Updated Dec 10 '01)
Pros:Informative, and Useful.
Cons:--
The Bottom Line: Excellent weekly magazine with useful information and articles.

This wonderful little weekly magazine is chock full of information. TimeOut NY comes out every Wednesday, and for $2.75 -- cheaper if you subscribe – you get information on upcoming events for that week. Anyone remotely interested in finding out what to do in NYC this week should get this magazine.

Sure, one can rely on the two free weeklies, the Village Voice, and NY Press for upcoming events, but they merely list the events; TimeOut NY, on the other hand, is dedicated to both seeing, and doing. It combines the weekly list with the cultural section of the NY Times. Each issue features a cover story with related topics.

There may be a best cheap eats guide, and they scour all the boroughs for best; or they may have the annual sex guide, like where to go look for good strip clubs, bdsm and other fetishes, sex shops, reviews on sexy clothing, and accessories (http://www.timeoutny.com/features/316/316.ft.sex.html). Volunteering your time after sept11? A recent issue dealt with that topic. Whatever the cover story, the advice TimeOut NY gives is clear, and no bullshit is dispensed.

The weekly events are located after the featured articles section, and most of the 100+ pages of the magazine is dedicated to weekly events and advertising. Like the Village Voice, TimeOut NY features a huge music section further subdivided into rock, jazz, and classical/opera. There is an events section devoted to theater, one for movies, clubs and raves, art, books, dance, kids, and a section for gay and lesbian events.

TimeOut NY also has an excellent website. TimeOutNY.com has a simple, uncluttered design that is easy to navigate, and best of all, contains a full, unlimited archive of all previous issues. Use the website to search for articles on bars and pubs, restaurants, shops; or simply browse from cover to cover.
