| druzba's Full Review: Wallpaper* Magazine |
My epinion title has two meanings because you'll love this magazine if you buy it but only if you "get" their style and content.
1. A marvel of graphic design and presentation, Wallpaper* is refreshing compared to other low-tier mags. Every issue a work of art, the graphic designer or artist in you will be inspired and delighted with every page.
2. Staff writing is superb with photo spreads to match. Almost every article is filled with subtle sexual innuendos and allusions to sex and gayness that go completely unnoticed by readers who don't "get it." Some people might say, "Who cares?" but I ask, "When was the last time Vogue, Time, or People added a little sass to their writing?" For writers and those obsessed with the written word, lessons abound in these pages.
3. The photos and advertisements have a certain soft porn quality. Sure, the models are ultra-waif and show a lot of skin but who cares? It's not about the models, it's about the total image of the shots and scenes. If you're a high school aged boy, this magazine will do just as well as any other.
4. The articles on travel are excellent. It's not lifestyles of the rich and famous. It's not "Rough Guide." Maybe if Alby Mangells wore Prada and was obsessed with Europe, it might approximate Wallpaper*'s vision of world travel and sophistication. If you don't now who Alby Mangells is then just forget it. If you strive for "the moment" in everything you do when you travel, then Wallpaper* is just that for you.
5. I find the architecture and interior design articles, combined with the presentation of the whole magazine, to be inspiring in general. The magazine finds beauty in a blender as much as a building. If you're a dreamer, Wallpaper* is for you.
Overall, I would say that the magazine hopes to capture "the moment" in all the world around us. It's that little chill you get when you're in a cafe in Stockholm and you know you just had the best Tiramisu you've ever had because of the taste, the surroundings, and the time.
Wallpaper* is trendy and their staff damn well knows it. They never let on though and never self-admit that they are "your source for all things good." It's uncontrived contrivance. The magazine exudes the staff's confidence and attention to quality in every way. Each issue a planned presentation.
Give it a try, you'll save each issue like a book (and at once, you'll feel lame for doing so, as if members of their staff would somehow disapprove of such hoarding). Sigh - Wallpaper*, why do you tease me so?
