Pros: free to web developers, well written, cutting edge, excellent reference material
Cons: could use a broader vision sometimes (although to be fair, its purpose is to give you tools, tips, and techniques, not strategy)

| webword's Full Review: Web Techniques Magazine |
If you are a web developer, it is in your interest to subscribe to this excellent magazine (if nothing else, it is free). I read every article, every editorial, every bit of news, and even some ads. This is essential reading for any web developer.
Here are some more precise reasons:
1) The articles are practical, concise, and well developed. You are virtually guaranteed, at least as a web developer, to find value in each issue. A wide range of topics are covered. For example, Java, use of colors, Perl coding, database development, and a whole lot more. There are often special topics covered too. Basically, you get a variety of excellent advice.
2) Web Techniques is an excellent reference. I find myself going back to old issues (which cost $9.00 USD to back order) frequently. The examples are often right on, and don't require much tweaking. Readers do complain once in a while about errors, but this is rare. Instead, readers heap praise on the writers and point out ways to augment a bit of code or technique.
3) As I implied above, Web Techniques has some great writers. These folks know their stuff. You can tell that they have been doing this kind of work for a while. They all write well, but I especially like the way that Randall Schwartz and Molly Holzschlag write (and their topics are more relevant to my work).
4) I also have indicated that Web Techniques is cutting edge. They don't mess around with web development! As a developer, if you want to know what is coming down the road, this is a must read. They have talked about XML, Open Source, and Business-to-Business e-commerce. And they are moving forward too. This is one reason why I often need to go back to my mini Web Techniques archive.
Useful Information
This took some effort, but I found a web page that allows you to subscribe, for free, to Web Techniques. For some reason their web site (webtechniques.com) is down. In any event, here is a form you can use:
--> http://as400.halldata.com/cgi-bin/subscribe/wb?pk=MWT99
If you'd rather subscribe via phone, call 1-800-677-2452.
Bottom line: I'd pay to get this magazine if I had to, but I am glad that it is free to web developers. If you are a web developer, subscribe now. You’ll be glad you did.
