It IS A Woman's World!

Written: Nov 04 '01
Pros:Something inside for most every woman.
Cons:A little too sickeningly sweet at times.
The Bottom Line: I would recommend Woman's World for a quick read and for clipping a few interesting tidbits of info---not, however, for serious reading.

Woman's World magazine is available at supermarket checkout stands. Inexpensive compared to most magazines, it costs $1.49 per issue. It is, however, not of the same quality as Rosie or Redbook or Ladies Home Journal. More like a high-quality tabloid-style magazine, its format has got to be a significant factor in its price.

Celebrities often grace the cover. In an October issue Delta Burke was featured, touting a headline about her boosted metabolism. Often the headlines include weight-loss and exercise tips. Sometimes those headlines make one question whether or not this is a legitimate women's magazine or a tabloid. "Anna S. loses 100 pounds on soup diet". I would be inclined to wonder about this one!

On the other hand there are some very good articles in Woman's World. Each issue features a travel article, which not only provides photos and destination information, they also provide links or phone numbers to contact for additional information.

The recipes included are typically very good, and suited to most any taste and budget. I have used many of their recipe suggestions at holiday time, and for my kid's school parties.

The fashion section is great for working women, as the fashions featured are affordable take-offs on pricier designer labels. Purchasing information is always included.

Seasonal craft and decorating ideas are excellent. I have utilized many of their ideas for Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter crafts and decorations. Most of the materials are readily available and not expensive. They often use recycled materials, too.

A section titled "Your Good Health" offers short tidbits of pertinent information concerning preventative medicine and maintaining good health. Helpful tips on medical procedures, as well as mental health updates are informative and timely.

Woman's World features two fiction sections. A romantic short story and a mini-mystery--typically written by freelance writers--are usually fun fast reads and are most always enjoyable.

Each issue of Woman's World features a column by Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen of "Chicken Soup for the Soul" fame. I typically skip this because I am a "Chicken Soup" fan and have read all of the books. Each column features a story from one of the published books. For those who don't collect the books, this is a great way to read the stories.

Richard Simmons has a column in each issue, and if you're a Richard Simmons fan, you'll love it. He answers a reader's question, and does so with so much emotion and creative advice, that the reader comes away feeling he or she has had a personal conversation with the fitness guru himself!

Now, on to those sections that I feel become a little too wishy-washy. "Happy Ending", "A Mother's Story" and "Success of Modern Medicine" all re-create true events in people's lives. They are wonderful stories of medical miracles, infertility problems solved, and children who defied the odds in terms of physical and mental capacity. But they are so incredibly predictable! You know what the ending will be when you read the first paragraph! I certainly don't mean to imply that these stories aren't worthy of telling---I simply feel that perhaps one per issue, rather than featuring all three sections per issue, would be less sickeningly sweet. No offense implied!

Editor-in-chief Stephanie Saible leads a large staff of writers and editors. Woman's World does accept some freelance submissions.

This is a great magazine to pick up for a buck-and-a half, if you're looking for something to thumb through and maybe clip a few interesting recipes or tidbits of info. You will not digest a magazine like Woman's World the way you'd spend time reading Good Housekeeping!
