| joli's Full Review: Women's Sports and Fitness Magazine |
If the worth of a magazine is measured in how many pages I tear out of it, then this magazine is truly great. It is called Women's Sports and Fitness; and that is exactly what you get on each and every page - even in the advertisements. I, an amateur runner, walker, bike rider, swimmer, and weight lifter, have always found this magazine very interesting and useful.
The first thing we see on a magazine is the cover. We expect the cover to accurately portray what we will find within its pages. We expect Cosmopolitan to have a gorgeous woman on the front, and at least one article on how to please your man in bed; we expect Mens Health to have a picture of a healthy man on the cover, and articles on how to stay or become healthy. But what would we expect from a magazine called Women's Sports and Fitness? I am looking at four past covers of Women's Sports and Fitness right now - I find a picture of Gabrielle Reece, Mia Hamm, Sarah Wynter (who's she?) and some model. The cover stories that catch my eye are 'The Race for Results: three workouts, one winner', 'Great Athletes, lousy diets; learn from their mistakes', 'Run longer, better, faster, and never get bored', and 'Sexy muscles; 6 exercises that will give you dangerous curves'.
I've never been interested in the editor's letters of a magazine, or who is responsible for what goes where - so I don't even know with this magazine - sorry if that's what you were looking for. But, I think that the regular features of a magazine can tell you a lot about it. With Women's Sports and Fitness, the regular features are:
No Sweat-
This is the last page of the magazine - it usually has something to do with celebrities, like pictures of them and how they keep fit, or who has the best abs - etc.
Pulse -
This is a section, usually a page or two only per topic, that usually proves very usefull. The topics are fitness, outdoors, body, gear, and planner. The fitness topic normally includes technical alert for certain movements or skills (jumping rope, balancing), we tried it for fitness videos or a type of martial arts ..., and Hot commodity which is a new or useful fitness accessory, explained. You get the picture.
Active file-
This section comains many different things like Q&A, Nutrition, Fitness Trend, and Sports style - but one constant is usually Your New Sport which explains sports in case you want to try them. Sometimes they are obscure sports - like skeet shooting, and sometimes they are up-and-coming sports, like sea kayaking.
Columns -
The best and most regular column of this magazine is Gabby by Gabrielle Reece. Who better to personify women's sports and fitness then this famous woman who made it okay to be tall and strong and thick. She talks about why you should be unique, and experiences she has had - usually with a new sporty picture of herself - if I were 5 inches taller I'd look like her :).
This magazine is geared towards you and me, it encourages, instructs, and enlightens. The women displayed within it aren't wearing lipstick or jewelry - they aren't concerned with fashion. They do model their sports bras, and display their muscles. They are real - and we still strive to be them, with this magazine's excellent assistance.
