Pros: Occasionally informative, lots of hot boiz, unapologetic
Cons: Immature writing, seems to promote being a slut
The Bottom Line: If you're a young gay boi, you'll probably like this magazine for kicks, but it's not for deep intellectual articles or accurate reporting. Everyone loves half-naked guys though.

| PoeticLegend's Full Review: XY Magazine |
Except for the recent addition of Joey to the market, XY has been the only magazine strictly for gay youth for several years, and is marketed as being for gay youth written by gay youth. And the fact that it is written by such is incredibly apparant when reading the magazine. The articles are often immature, with the writers just rambling on abou themselves and their opinions. I've heard it dexcribed as softcore porn and I wouldn't disupute this, as the magazine is fille with half-naked guys and the writers talking about very subjects like why open relationships are okay, why the age of consent should be lowered and various other topics encouraging sexual activity. Not that I condemn it, but it seems to be the main focus of the magazine. I hate to think that a Christian fundamentalist would ever get ahold of one of these, because this magazine, while it tries to be funny through mockery, the content could be used to show the "immorality of gay people" that the fundamentalists always attempt to project. Also, there are nothing but young, very very attractive and skinny, built young boiz... and for someone who's had an eating disorder for feeling inadequate, this does to them what all the magazines of beautiful women do to young girls... it gives the message that you can't be a good young gay person unless you're incredibly hot.
Not that XY is all bad. You've got to admire it's unapologetic ways, not feeling like they need to be politically correct, and unashamed to flaunt youth's unbridled sexuality. And, sometimes you just want the facts, not all the beating around the bush, and XY always says what it thinks. Very often the articles DO come in handy. While most magazines would only give the downside of drugs, XY's Youth Survival Guide describes the cons AND pros of every drug. XY takes into account the idea that youth are going to do what they want, so why not give them the facts instead of pretending they won't do it if you don't tell them? All in all, a decent magazine, but not one for deep intellectual reasons and accurate articles.
