Your Big Backyard - fosters exploration and imagination

Written: Apr 06 '01
Pros:Great information, tons of pictures, encourages exploration.
Cons:We wish it came more than once a month!
The Bottom Line: This is a must have for inquisitive children aged 3-6. Not only do I recommend it, I've given several gift subscriptions!

I can't say enough good things about this magazine. I have an almost 6 year old daughter who has been getting this magazine for almost two years now. She got a subscription as a gift from her grandparents and she absolutely loves it. It's one of the few birthday gifts that she received that lasted all the way to her next birthday!

Basic Information:

Your Big Backyard is published by the National Wildlife Federation, which is a non profit organization. It's design and goal is to appeal to the minds of inquisitive children aged 3 to 6 years of age. The magazine is published once a month and a year's subscription in the United States is $15.00

What the Magazine Includes

1. Approximately 30 pages full of colorful upclose pictures of animals and various wild life.
2. The magazine contains several activities my daughter can do by herself including mazes, games, and more.
3. There is a ton of great information written in language that appeals to younger children.
4. There are pull out posters that are fun to hang on childrens' walls.

Other Bonuses

1. This magazine encourages children to explore and learn about their environment. It gives them ideas to help them find interesting things outdoors to look for.
2. This is also great for family time. The younger reader can't read and this magazine is a great way to spend time together, reading and learning about animals and the environment.
3. When you subscribe to this magazine it is sent to the child directly, with his or her name on it. This may not *seem* like a big deal but my daughter loves getting something mailed directly for her, it makes her feel grown up.
4. It's a great inspiration for activities to answer the never ending "there's NOTHING to do" whine. When my kids say that I can whip out a magazine and say "how about this?" It works every time.
5. A subscription to this magazine makes a great gift for a daughter or son, grandchildren, neices and nephews....anyone of that age!
