Pros: Naked women, penetration, liberal politics
Cons: Are you kidding?
Warning: this review deals with patently adult issues. The magazine under consideration is pornographic, and highly sexual in nature. If you are easily offended read no further!
Hustler is an adult magazine. It is, by any measure, porn. But dont let that drive you away. Sure, the magazine is filled with photos of buxom women sans clothing; often with their legs spread wide, and their fingers tugging at their labia. But, really, isnt that what you buy magazines for in the first place? No? Maybe we have different taste in magazines.
Hustler was founded by Larry Flynt (see the wonderful film The People versus Larry Flynt for some history of how the magazine came into existence). At the time Playboy was the king of mens magazines. Hustler did something new. It left behind the dry writing (which Playboy would also drop later), and focused on down and dirty sex. Hustler was (as far as I know) the first U.S. magazine to show female genitalia. That changed everything.
Of course, now a lot of magazines are just as dirty as Hustler. Penthouse, for instance. It seems that a lot of mags compete to see who can be the dirtiest. Many of them (Hustler included) now feature actual penetration. Wow! You heard me. In the pages of Hustler you can see actual penetration. Puritans take note.
So, you ask: is Hustler any good? Measured against other pornographic magazines, I mean.
Yeah. It is. Hustler features lovely photography. And I mean that. I dont merely think of the photography as good because of the subject matter. Rather, I have noticed that the artisans behind the scenes have real talent. None of that soft focus garbage here. Nope. Hustler gets right down to the nitty gritty: close-ups of attractive people undertaking all manner of sex acts. Hustler loves good dirty sex.
What about the articles, you ask with a smug grin on your face. Well, Hustler focuses on news items and humor. The news items tend to be timely, and fairly intelligent. Hell, Hustler has broken some stories before the main stream media. The humor is often outrageously funny. Unfortunately, it is also quite gross. Some may be disgusted by the things they see (but hey, if youre buying a porno mag, you really oughta crank down your ability to be offended a bit).
Hustler's politics are quite clearly liberal (as are mine, by the way).
The cartons are a favorite feature. They often lampoon golden calves, as it were. Hustlers cartoons are famous for using cultural icons in sexual situations. This is the point at which some may be offended.
What about the price? Around eight bucks is a bit much, but what are you gonna do? If you want good porn, this is the price you pay.
In the world of pornography, Hustler ranks high. Certainly much better than Penthouse, and a little better than Playboy.
