"Men's Journal" is a collection of ads for overpriced watches and other male toys, glued together by articles of varying depth and relevance. Let's see, sandwiched between the hair-loss remedies and sport/utility ads we have an article on North Carolina's Black River. This article is nearly long enough to be an Epinion! Wow! Next, we have 'how to deal with vicious dogs', for those who didn't have the common sense to avoid said canines in the first place. An fitness article actually shows a Really Buff Guy (I used to look like that, honest) doing pull-ups while hanging from a chain-link fence. Now THAT'S practical! I'm sure it impresses the ladies, though. An article, "Pamplona Por Los Numeros" (Pamplona by the numbers) is about participating in the annual rite of running the bulls. Can I use this? Anyone with the money to vacation in Pamplona likely has the smarts to avoid this particular stunt. I guess this would fall into the 'not relevant' category. Equally, the article on a credit-card scorcher of a summer vacation. Apparently one should devote the entire summer to blasting from adventure to adventure, getting a very shallow taste of things that should require a little devotion.
I have to say that, individually, some articles were well-written and captivating. However, if you remove the ads "Men's Journal" would slim down by half and could be retitled "Men's Newsletter". A bald guy named Gino could then churn it out on cheap green paper with an old mimeograph machine. Sorry, can't recommend this magazine to anyone. Stick with Maxim.
