Pros:You can use this inside and get that fryer turkey taste.

Cons:This may be a little hefty in the price department.

The Bottom Line: You will be surprised that you won't have to stand and watch this the whole time and will be surprised at how quick this cooks your bird and other foods.


Guess what? It is time for the Holidays, surprise your wife and family with a new electric turkey frying cooking process by MasterBuilt Butterball, your families taste buds will thank you. Their waist line might not like you after this, but you will get a lot of praise when you are done, so you might want to start to get ready and get that stuff that you need before the stores run out of supplies. You also may want to try something a little different this year. This new electric turkey fryer from Butterball will show you how to have that turkey taste without using propane and being able to do it in the convenience of your own home. If you purchase one of these you will never go back to the other way of cooking your turkey (and I don't mean your husband or wife). Whether the weather is good or bad, anytime is the right time to cook in this fashion. Right now, you can find these turkey cookers at just about any home improvement store or even at any sporting goods store such as Dicks, Gander Mountain, Bass Pro Shop, and even Meijer's. This particular type will only cost you right around $150.00, but if you do not have the peanut oil, this is where it will cost you more than one hundred and fifty dollars. This is well worth the price because you will never go back to the old way of preparing a holiday turkey again.

Description
What you should get inside of the box is a square stainless steel unit weighing about 20 pounds, this comes with a detachable lid, this unit measures 15" tall x 18" wide (side to side) x 15" deep (front to back). This whole unit is made of stainless steel and the inside is a carbon black steel. There is no assemble required, and it should only take no more than ten minutes to figure out how to remove all of the cardboard and Styrofoam from the inside of the unit.

This model includes the lifting strainer basket with a handle and a lifting turkey hook and hanger to lift the turkey out of the hot oil. This basket also has two hooks that will allow you to set the basket to sit on the side of the vat and it can drip the access oil off into the vat instead all over the floor. There are loose parts that come included, and they are a electric control panel and heating element, the basket, aluminum filter, valve door, valve spout, power cord,  .

Experience
The is no assembly that is needed to be able to start to use this fryer. Once you get everything hooked up, all that you have to do is fill with just about 3 gallons of peanut oil (but you can use any combinations of oil to cook your bird in) then wait until the temperature of the oil gets up to 375°. The easiest thing to do is plugging this unit in, and once you do plug it in then away you go.

There is a maximum fill line that is indented on the side of the pot so that you do not accidentally overfill the pot with oil. If you do overfill this will cause spillage and possible start a fire. One of the most important thing that you should watch is to make sure that you drain all of the excessive water from the Turkey, the easiest way to do this is by letting it hang for ten to fifteen minutes and then dump the water out.

Then if you have any stuffing or marinade that you would like to inject this is the time to do it. Once you reach the oil temperature of 375° bringing the oil to a boil (make sure that you dry the bird off before lower the bird into the oil) and then lower the turkey very slowly and I mean slowly into the oil. This is when you can start using the thermometer to keep the temperature up to the 375°. You will have to keep a constant surveillance of this cooker, you may see the turkey start floating before it is done cooking. The best guideline for cooking a turkey this way is about 3.5-4 minutes per pound. This size pot will only hold a 20 pound turkey maximum. The total time for this turkey will be just about one hour and 20 minutes.

One of the most important things about cooking a turkey this way is to make sure that it is unfrozen and dry. If it is frozen when you are ready to start you may have to soak it in warm water to finish unthawing it. You should also rinse the entire turkey inside and out to remove any loose debris, once this is done you should be ready to begin the process of cooking your turkey in the convenience of your own kitchen without the danger of starting a fire. You will need to fill the pot up to the fill line and set the temperature at 375°( the preheating process may take anywhere up to 30 to 45 minutes to get the oil up to temp.) you will need to keep the lid closed all the time that you are pre-heating the oil.

This should give you enough time to prepare your turkey by marinating it and seasoning it properly. We gave our fryer a test run before the holidays and found the best way to make sure that you cook your turkey long enough was to multiply the pounds of the turkey by 4 minutes and you should be okay. When you purchase a turkey they will come with a pop up timer inserted in the breast, you will need to remove this because the oil will melt this because it is made of plastic. You can use a metal meat thermometer to check the inside temp of your bird. This fryer also has a ready indicator light that will light up when the bird is ready. You will need to make sure that you place the bird in the metal basket breast side up, the company recommends that you wear protective gloves but if you are very careful you should have no problems lowering the bird into the oil without getting burnt. This does have a safety device and that is a reset button that is located on the back side of the control panel, this is there is the unit ever gets overheated. So far our unit has never even came close to overheating. To get to this button you will have to remove the bird and the heating element and corner control panel will lift our of the vat and you should see the reset button, all you have to do is push this in and it should be reset and you can continue.

When the light turns on this is the notification that the oil is hot enough for you to insert the bird and then the light will come on again when the bird is done. This has a digital timer to help you so that you can start preparing the rest of your dinner. When the timer goes off you should set it to the minimum amount and pull the bird up and set the basket on the clips that will hold it to the side so that it can drain. Make sure that you unplug the power cord from the source so there is no possibility of tripping or the heat accidentally getting turned back on.

Make sure that you let the turkey drain for 10 minutes before you pull it away from the pot. This also lets the juices settle before you start to carve the bird. If you let the juices settle it will not be so stringy when you are slicing the bird. If you are not careful and let it drip drain, then you will have a mess to deal with. Once you cut into this bird you will be amazed at how juicy that cooking it this way is. The oil will seal the juices inside of the bird. Using peanut oil is the best way, but if you are allergic to peanuts then you can use vegetable oil and when you are done you can strain the oil with a fine strainer and re-use the oil again. There are some cavities that you may notice, and if you are wondering what they are for, they are purposely made for catching any grease that may spill. Just make sure that you wipe these areas out after you are done using this unit.

Draining
If you have the traditional fryer you will have the tedious task of draining and straining the peanut oil. This unit has a drain spout (just remove the protective plastic cap and screw the spot into the valve) and on/off valve that will allow you to drain at a more controlled method right over the sink, this way you will not have to lift a heavy tub of oil. You should probably make sure you let the oil cool for at least 2 hours or more to prevent any one getting burnt. This unit is not dishwasher safe and should only be washed by hand. If you need to get to spots when the lid hinges, you will be happy to know that the lid is removable just by depressing the two buttons and the hinges will pop out instantly so that you can clean it thoroughly.

Other Uses
You can also use this for steaming chicken breasts, steamed shrimp, vegetables, making those famous onion straws, seafood cocktails, any fish, hot wings, pork, egg dishes, steaks, roasts, beef, veal, lamb, duck, any ground turkey, and chicken. You can even use this for French fries, mushrooms, okra, chicken nuggets, fish sticks, corn dogs, cheese sticks, corn on the cob, red potatoes, pasta, hot dogs, king crab legs, clams and mussels, squash and peppers, blue crabs and yes even my favorite the lobster. The basket will help keep these away from the water so that you can thoroughly steam just about any kind of food.

Conclusion
One hour and 20 minutes cooking time sure beats 5 or 6 hours in the oven and once you do it this way, you will never go back. The juices will flow out of the turkey from the second that you start to cut into your bird. We have used this on our deck but you have to be extra careful and constant surveillance is needed no matter wherever you decide to set this up at. Just about anyone can do it this way, it just might be a little bit overwhelming at first. But, once you do it no one will know that you have only done it once. Five stars for the best tasting bird ever. By the way, I do not know if it makes a difference they recommend that you use a Butter Ball Turkey, and if you use some other type you will need to remove the pop out timer and cut the legs loose. Just remember that even though you will probably clean this out when you are finished you should probably clean it out before each use, just in case any dust or bacteria builds up between uses. By simply using a damp cloth should do the trick, at least it has for us. This unit is the most universals fryer that I have ever owned. Five big stars for the versatility and ease that this company has made it to be able to clean up afterwards.
