Green Lantern Action League: Tomar-Re, Hal Jordan & Sinestro 3-Pack Set — Triple the Power
Written: Dec 18, 2011 (Updated Dec 18, 2011)

Pros:Good three pack set; exclusive Green Lantern Sinestro; awesome price
Cons:Unfortunately Sinestro isn't repainted to match the other Lanterns; repackaged figures
The Bottom Line: Tomar-Re, Hal Jordan and Sinestro bolster the ranks of the Green Lantern Corps but it would have been nice to see some new faces in the mix.
Wal-Mart capitalized on Green Lantern’s popularity during the summer by offering exclusive three-pack sets from the DC Universe Action League series. To make it more appealing and stand apart as its own entity, it was dubbed as the Green Lantern Action League collection with three sets of three-pack figures. For the most part, two-thirds of each set features repackaged figures. It’s that third figure in each set that proves to be the difference maker with Tomar-Re, Hal Jordan and Sinestro. Hal Jordan is proving to be the repeated staple character for the Green Lantern line. I don’t mind that there are multiple versions of him except for the fact that he is always in the same pose. This one is no different. It is still the same cocky character that is evident in his look and stance. He wears the classic Green Lantern costume. The costume reflects the standard Green Lantern design with the slight current modification. The difference between this and the standard version is a very minor repaint of the Green Lantern emblem on his chest. It has a glowing energy charge spreading out from it making it seem like he is powering up. The green energy coming out from his emblem is done in a lighter tint of green so it doesn’t clash with emerald green on his costume. This look is seen with the Hal Jordan version that has him transforming from a Green Lantern to a Blue Lantern. In fact this particular figure feels like the transitional one from the standard to the Blue Lantern when you lie up all three in a row. Tomar-Re is the Green Lantern that befriended Hal when he first made his appearance on Oa. He’s the Green Lantern that looks like a cross between a bird and a fish. But that’s only his head for the rest of the body follows the standard ad classic Green Lantern outfitting. In fact you can take off his head and replace it with someone else without missing a beat. In this case if you have extra Guy Gardners or John Stewarts, this would be a great modification to make by putting their heads on this body. There is nothing different between this release and the one that appeared in DC Universe Action League Series 2. It is quite safe to say that this is a straight repack from the original with no changes to the figure whatsoever. Sinestro is really the reason why this set is appealing. This isn’t the version of Sinestro that went rogue and obtained a yellow power ring. Instead this is Sinestro when he was still a Green Lantern. He wears the classic costume except that the shade of green is different from the other two. In fact the sculpting is also different with less detailing. This is because the Sinestro seen in this three-pack is a holdover from the defunct Batman: The Brave and the Bold Action League series that came out prior to this one. Sinestro was slated for release in that line, which explains why the rendering of this figure is more streamlined than the current versions of the Action League figures. Unfortunately that line was discontinued early to make way for the current DC Universe Action League models; therefore, those characters that were planned never got to see the light of day until now. This also explains why Sinestro doesn’t have the same polished look with a combination of matte and glossy paint applications; he is all matte painted. I do like his face rendering, as it is similar to the current version. The yellow eyes really make him look alien and cold. All figures have the same four-point articulated features on the arms, neck and waist areas. This is a standard for these figures and one that makes sense. I do love the durability of the harder plastic used in creating these figures. Tomar-Re, Hal Jordan and Sinestro from the Green Lantern Action League Comic Series is a good find and probably the most desirable of the three different sets just because of Sinestro. This is the first time this version has ever been released so it’s a hot commodity. This Wal-Mart exclusive was being sold around the $12.00 mark but went out of style quite quickly. Luckily I found this at Five Below for $5.00. What really would have put this set over the top would have been the inclusion of Abin Sur, Hal Jordan’s predecessor, into the mix rather than Tomar-Re. But I guess it can still be achieved if you modify a head to replace onto Tomar-Re’s body. Ah, there’s no respect for the bird/fish Green Lantern. _________________________________________________________
