The Smiths

Pros:Fun summer movie.

Cons:Can't stand up to much scrutiny.

The Bottom Line: --

Mr. and Mrs. Smith comfortably fits into the "summer blockbuster" category. Starring in the movie are two of Hollywood's hot, A-list actors, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. You can be sure that these two stars will bring in plenty of viewers. Additionally, the movie is full of explosions and a carefree plot. And, by "carefree," I mean that the viewer does not have to think much to enjoy the movie. Actually, it's better if he or she does not think too much while viewing this one.

Unfortunately, the three acts of this film have already been laid out in the movie's preview. For the sake of those of you who have not seen any previews (ha), I will not go into each act of the film. Rather, I will allow you to enjoy the story as it unfolds. In fact, if you know nothing about the movie, stop reading now. I would have preferred to allow the entire plot to unfold than to have known what I did. Whatever. Until we change movie marketing, we are just going to have to suck it up and deal with the fact that we already know the first two-thirds (or more) of the film and have heard most of the punch lines.

Whoops! I went off on a diversion. Anyway, for those of you still with me, this film is about a married couple (Pitt and Jolie) who both turn out to be spies. The two work for competing agencies, but are clueless as to the other's real occupation. Things get moving, action-wise, when they discover the true identity of their spouse.

I really enjoyed Pitt's and Jolie's performances. Of course, the roles weren't too deep or difficult, but they still did well. You could tell that they truly enjoyed making this movie (I'm not going to enter into a tabloid discussion at this point, so deal). Vince Vaughn played Pitt's buddy and co-spy. As such, he turned out to be used perfectly. He was on the screen just the right amount of time and applied the appropriate level of energy to the film. The girl who was supposed to be the same kind of buddy-person for Jolie was not as good. I am not even going to look up her name. If you're curious, you can look it up yourself. OK. That sounded rude. Anyway, whatever. She wasn't a bad actress, but the script gave her very little.

Overall, this is a movie that I would definitely call a "popcorn flick." That is the kind of movie that you can just sit back and enjoy without having to think. And, like I said previously, it is best not to think too much about this one. The friends I went with were able to point out a couple of problems as soon as the movie was over. I just told them not to hurt themselves thinking about it.

The problems with the movie's plots did not bother me greatly. I am bothered when something happens in a movie that couldn't happen. For instance, some time travel movies bother me. I sit there and work out the logic and think, "Hey. That's impossible. That makes no sense whatsoever." That bothers me. But Mr. and Mrs. Smith has a plot where you will think, "That shouldn't happen." That doesn't bother me as much. Could it happen? Sure. So, it's really no big deal. (I'm not going to get specific as to what I'm referring, because I don't want to reveal too much of the already obvious plot. But, suffice it say, I am not referring to the general plot of two married individuals both being spies and then trying to kill each other)

Anyway, should you see Mr. and Mrs. Smith? Yes. It is a very enjoyable film that will leave you on a high note at the end of your evening. Is it going to be the best film of the summer? No way. I've already seen better films this summer. Actually, it is a throw-away movie in my book. In a year, I will have forgotten about the movie.

Oh, and one last, tangent-kind-of thing. This movie did have similarities to Bonnie and Clyde and The War of the Roses. Just wanted to throw that out there.
