"Shepherd Moons" is Enya's third musical effort (with "Caribbean Blue" as the single release from the CD) exemplifying the high quality of craftsmanship which is the benchmark of Enya music. "Shepherd Moons" is every bit as beautiful and haunting as her second CD "Watermark".
Her ethereal voice backed up by music that sticks to the roof of your mind is what hooked me on her music back in the late 1980s when "Watermark" was released with the hit single "Orinoco Flow", a tune so versatile that it has been used in several movies and TV commercials. After falling in love with her Celtic musical charms I discovered her first CD simply titled "Enya" (music from the PBS special "The Celts") which was repackaged and re-released in the mid 1990s with the title "The Celts" containing a previously unreleased track "Paint the Sky with Stars".
Her subsequent release "The Memory of Trees" is another must buy with music of equal quality to the previous releases. Now in 2000 the new CD "A Day Without Rain" is bound to be yet a continuation of soft, shimmering, echoes from the Irish lass folks like myself have come to love. I will find out for Christmas (Lord willing).
In the same way as there is no such thing as a bad or poorly made DaVinci painting, there is no such thing (at least so far) as a bad or poorly made Enya song.
Nicky Ryan writes most if not all the words to her songs and from the depths of her soul Enya creates melodies to fit those words. Some are sung in English but more interesting at times are the ones sung in the ancient Gaelic language of the Celts and each CD (with the exception of "Enya" a.k.a. "The Celts") has at least one heart stopping song sung in Latin often accompanied by music slightly reminiscent of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana - Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi though with a much more delicate sound that lands in the back of your brain with gossamer wings.
I think it is the perfect music for reading. I can pop an Enya CD in the player and wing through a book much faster than when I don't.
