This is my submission to the Reflections of Hope write-off. My husband was a fan of Frank Fontaine and this love song. This submission will show that, I hope.
My husband sat on the couch, in the living room, enjoying the Christmas party that was going on around him. A friend was playing the organ and a sing-a-long was in progress.
A granddaughter sang “Silent Night” and his eyes filled with tears but, he blinked them away and applauded with his crooked hands. A duet of “My Hero” (the Nelson Eddy/Jeanette MacDonald classic) made him laugh, as it did lose a lot in the rendering.
There came a lull in the action and folks began to wander toward the dining room to fill plates with food. The organ music was soft in the background and my husband began to sing.
“Let me call you Sweetheart, I’m in love with you-----------
……..his voice filled the room as the organist played along with him
“Let me hear you whisper, that you love me too-----------
……..I could not believe what I was hearing . We had been married 35 years and I had never heard him sing before.
“Keep the love lights glowing, in your eyes so blue---------
……..everyone stopped what they were doing. Some, quietly, came back into the room and others just stood in place.
“Let me call you Sweetheart, I’m in love with you.”
I walked over and sat down beside him and as he took my hand in his and lifted to his lips and kissed it, I said, “That was beautiful.” My heart was so filled with love I could hardly speak. My eyes filled with tears.
“I only had one song in me,” he said, “ and that I just gave to you.”
He is gone now but his serenade remains in my heart. His love was full and giving. He touched us all that night as this is meant to touch you.
I hope.
