My 45 collection... (Reply to this comment)
by plorentz
I didn't actually own a copy of this album until a couple years ago (I bought it after seeing the video for "Mama" on VH-1 Classic), but I did have the 45 of "That's All" back in the day, and I loved it not just because the song was so friggin' cool, but also because - unlike basically every other 45 I owned - it actually had a picture on Side A (Flowers! I love flowers!) instead of the usually label logo/design.
In the meantime, I have gone back and picked up all of the "classic" Genesis re-masters ("Foxtrot" is probably my favorite), but I have a special place in my heart for this album.
Can weight for Number 8...

Magnum P.I. episode titled "Death and Taxes" - it was one of the more serious episodes, and is regarded as one of the better shows too...

now that you mention songs from this album being used on TV shows, can you name the show that Mama appeared prominently in during it's 1987 season?

Tangent... (Reply to this comment)

"That's All" was the first Genesis record I heard as well. I already knew who Phil Collins was, so I was like "Cool! Phil's in a group and he sings by himself too!-Just like Michael Jackson!!". And, say what you want, but I like the pop stuff much more than I like the arty stuff, guess that's just the way I'm programmed.
Idiotic trivia-"Just A Job To Do" was the theme song to a "Miami Vice"-rip off show called "The Insiders" in the mid-Eighties. I drove myself mad trying to figure out what album that song was on till I finally bought "Genesis" like ten years later and fell in love all over again. Of course, I since lost that tape, so now I have to buy it again.
Great review! I'm long-winded!!

You Know Bob, (Reply to this comment)

As far as the die hard prog-heads are concerned, Genesis, Yes, Jethro Tull and King Crimson are all progressive music Gods.
Unfortunately this quasi prog-head hasn't been able to listen to these Gods in twenty years since I no longer own a turntable.
I assume, being the astute music affectionado that you seem to be that you have checked out Genesis's alter ego, Marillion. I actually prefer them, plus I've can play them, having CDs.

And the Tomato lies down on Broadway (Reply to this comment)

Yeah, this one was pretty good, although far from my personal fave. BUT, certainly not the worst of the Phil Collins era (hmmm is that a compliment?).
Anyway, despite the fact that this disc contains a song that is even more powerful live (the Home By The Sea two-fer), it also contains one of the worst Genesis tunes ever (Illegal Alien). And I hated it well before it ended up on Blender's Worst Songs ever. Awful. Just bloody awful. But it didn't ruin the album, I just had to fast forward past one song on the cassette.
Nice job as usual, sir! Looking forward to Entry Number Nine.
Number Nine? Number Nine? Number Nine? Number Nine? Number Nine?.....
Cheers,
Paul

selling out for twelve pounds a disc (Reply to this comment)
by voxpoptart
Oh yeah: "Mama" is a great and deeply fuucked song. For me, it's the only reason to own Genesis, but then i started with Selling England by the Pound and my phasers were probably set to Snob already. On the other hand, i like Collins's Hello, I Must Be Going, as much for the dorky charm of "Like China" (which i _think_ shows that Collins has a sense of humor) as for the massive drums of "I Don't Care Anymore" and its creepier counterpart "Do You Know, Do You Care?"
Hm... I don't seem to have anything coherent to say. But as far as quoting lyrics go, Phil Collins _did_ have coherent things to say, and they sure didn't make his records any better. Have faith in yourself, reviewer-boy.
cheers,
- Brian

Anyone that likes Pete Gabriel and Genesis can't be all that bad (despite what I've heard.)
I promise to read all of your top ten and comment on at least one of them. Very nice job here!

...review.
Chris
PS: Some of the lyrics of a few of the songs would be nice. I recently started adding lyrics in my reviews. It helps make them better.
