rancidpunxrule's Full Review: (MIA): The Complete Anthology by The Germs
Back in the late '70's, as disco was starting to fade out and bands like Queen were the talk of the town, punk rock was being born. One of the bands to spearhead this music revolution was The Germs. Fronted by Darby Crash, a young rapscallion with amazing performance energy, they never achieved much fame. Some people disregarded them as musicians because of their outrageous performances involving jockstraps, licorice whips, and the legendary peanut butter. However, their lyrics were surprisingly deep commentaries on society. All of these traits are evinced on this compilation.
MIA opens up with "Forming" a slow and steady tune which NOFX covered on their recent two disc set. This is followed by a rare live version of "Sex Boy". Both of these songs have a moderately slow pace but this picks up in later songs. Fast paced songs like "Communist Eyes" and "Lexicon Devil" express a raunchy and uninhibited quality which is lacking in modern music. Darby's lyrical abilities are also portrayed in some songs such as "Land of Treason" and "Media Blitz", both meaningful in their own right. The Germs also do an amazing cover of Chuck Berry's "Round and Round". They close with a second recording of "Forming" featuring a few laughs from the band.
MIA is everything that The Germs were. Pure, soulful, high-energy punk. Not only did The Germs spark the L.A. punk scene, they helped form the original punk scene and their influence will last forever. This album is true punk rock.
