Vandal7000's Full Review: (MIA): The Complete Anthology by The Germs
Background:
One of my favorite bands is the Germs. They were a 1979ish Los Angeles punk band that was more known crazy stage antics than their musical talent. There only major (not major label, just well known) release was GI before Darby Crash died of a heroin overdose. They are notorious for their appearence on the classic punk documentary The Decline of Western Civilization.
The CD:
The CD consists of 30 songs from various recordings of the Germs. A brief history of the band is given(along with the lyrics) is given inside the booklet, which I thought was pretty nice of them. They also included odd and somewhat funny of the band hanging out. These photos include notables Belinda Carlisle[The Go-Gos] and Pat Smear[Nirvana & The Foo Fighters] before they were major rockstars. The songs feature Darby's distinct rough, but not growly vocals and his somewhat trite lyrics. Rarities from out of print albums such as the Cruisin' soundtrack are included.
The Cons:
If you are looking for deep influential music it is not here. The general sound of the music is the sloppiest punk imaginable. Sex Boy is almost unlistenable the recording quality is so bad (but its live so they have an excuse.) Probably their absolutely live album, Live At The Whiskey, shows why people were so entertained by them. They were obnoxious, they talked to their fans on stage, and they were just crazy. Sadly none of these recordings were included in this CD.
Overall you should get it. Its classic punk rock at its less than finest, but still greatest. If you don't have it and you're a punk, get it before you die (unless you're Johnny Rotten than you don't have don't have to die young.)
