| rittdogg's Full Review: Complete Works by Goober & The Peas |
Recently, I wrote an epinion which stated my top ten albums of all time. I figured I should write a review on at least a few of my selections from the list. Goober & the Peas's debut album, The Complete Works of, is an easy target for me. Goober & the Peas's sound could be described as, I guess, rockabilly.
I first discovered this band while I was a lowly junior in high school. I had saw them live at a concert and they had won me over with their originality and quirkiness. My next goal in my short-term future was to find a copy of their album...
The Tracks
I usually would not type out all of the tracks for an album. However, this is a special case. I'm not sure a track list is easily accessible on the internet. So here they are:
1. Dear Grandpa
2. Funky Cowboy
3. Up the Stairs
4. Hot Women (Cold Beer)
5. Consider Me
6. Don't be Afraid
7. My Own Best Friend
8. Garden
9. If You Want Me
10. The Ballad of Ms. Amichi
11. Nothing Like Hers
12. It'll Getcha
13. Hunt for Grandpa (Let's Go)
14. Druthers
15. Dear Grandpa (Reprise)
16. Funky Cowboy (HillbillyMix) (CD Only)
17. Filler Dialogue (CD Only)
What's good?
I like the humorous lyrics and the topics the songs are about. The song "Hunt for Grandpa (Let's Go)" has ingenious lyrics such as:
Let's go hunt for grandpa, I know he's somewhere near
Let's go hunt for grandpa, we'll treat him like a deer
and
Faster grandpa, faster, can't you run fast than that?
I know your getting old, I know your getting fat!
You better run boy... cuz here we come in a truck!
I know of no other bands that would write a song about hunting their grandpa. I don't condone the lyrics. However, I know they are joking so they do not bother me. I find them funny.
What's not so good
This CD is out of print. I sure do not like that.
The CD is nothing compared to the live experience. However, the band is now broken up, so this CD is the closest one can get to the live experience. I do not know of any live albums or videos for Goober & the Peas out on the market.
Overall
This album has a funky sound. There are wonderfully funny lyrics. I have sold many of my CDs to generate extra income in the past eight years. I have never considered selling this album to get extra money. I love it.
Goober & the Peas were one of the most popular bands in the Detroit area in the early 1990s. If you would like more info, please visit http://www-personal.umich.edu/~jmtuttle/gooberpeas/ . There are FREE MP3's you can download at the site by the band. What are you waiting for??
Thank you for reading.
