Oh, Paul... (Reply to this comment)

I'm out of my head when you're not around (silly grin)...
I had this album on vinyl way back when and the one thing that still sticks out is what an excellent pop song "Out Of Touch" was. For two guys who had absolute mastery of the pop single-that song is probably in their Top 5.
I guess I should add that yet another H20 compilation comes out Tuesday-a fairly definitive double disc which will officially be the 5th H20 hits set currently in the marketplace-and you know what? Of the other 4, I already have 3-and my idiotic a** is gonna buy this one anyway.
Thanks for allowing the ramble-

Out of Touch too! Every time I hear it it recalls my coming-of age years in the eighties.
Great review!

Burn-
"Out of Touch" is just a great song. Don't know what it is about it, but I love it too. Though it's never made me... "horny", did you say?
Thanks for the comment,

While I may listen to mostly hip-hop, "Out of Touch" is one of my favorite songs EVER out of all the genres I listen to. I just love it. Makes me horny... errr, did I just say that out loud? Take it easy, Paul.

Paul...
Love it! Makes me want to have an 80s theme party right now. You can be Daryl. I'll be John. Maybe we could stage a little cat fight.

I love Rick Springfield too! I saw him in concert in Kansas City a couple years ago, and the dude still rocks. I missed his last album "Karma", but I'm very tempted to pick up his latest.
His 80s albums are excellent - highly underrated due to the whole "teen idol" (the guy was 30, for pity's sake) and "General Hospital" thing. I've been meaning to review his 80s albums for awhile.
But in the meantime, "Working Class Dog" from 1981 is a classic, an absolute must-own for any fan of crisp, clean power-pop. "Success Hasn't Spoiled Me Yet" (his most commercially successful) and "Living in Oz" are nearly as good.
And you can bet if/when I pick up his latest, you guys'll be the first to hear about it!

"Abandoned Luncheonette" is wonderful. I have it on vinyl, but I believe Rhino did an excellent CD reissue of it a while back. Very folky. Very nice. And the long version of "She's Gone".

Brian-
Sorry for the puzzlement. Yes, I love lots of silly acts, and I really really love the Thompson Twins. They're one of my favorite bands. My critique of this disc is that Hall & Oates attempting to out-Twin the Thompsons (who aren't really Thompsons, or twins, as we loved to repeatedly point out to our less knowledgable friends), was probably a bad move on their part. Hall & Oates tried a bunch of styles before this, but they never lost sight of the "Hall & Oates" in their songs. With this album, they lost the "Hall & Oates".
And I loved "Method of Modern Love" in 1984. But, in 2004, it really is dumb.
Thanks for the comment.

forget them starting around 1975 and go back to the blue-eyed acoustic soul sound of their second disc, 1973's "Abandoned Luncheonette".
Virtually no radio play, it is a cult classic, and deservedly so.
Great review of this disc, I couldn't get very excited about the tunes, myself.

Wow, rock stars that can spell!! Woohoo!!!
Why is it that I wanted to have tall hair, turquoise blazers with rolled-up sleeves and shiny studded leather ankle boots after listening to this album? I dunno. Oh, and my wrists had to be decked out with plastic bracelets galore. Real strange.
Cheers,
Paul

Okay, hold on. Good call on Hall & Oates being more interesting than they had to be, but i like "Method of Modern Love". I also like the Thompson Twins; i mean, they ain't the center of my tastes, but they're tuneful and a little interesting. You like _lots_ of dated and silly acts: it's one of your charms. Now suddenly dated-and-silly is a bad thing?
