Lose Yourself in Depths Below
by divad23 | Dec 22 '00
Pros: A wonderfully cohesive album full of driving progressive rock anthems and gentle instrumentals.
Cons: The pace may be a little slow and quiet for fans of more standard rock.

Yep, "Murlough Bay" is an awesome song. I've actually derived one of my online user names from it - murlough23.

very good review - paints this incredible album in the glorious colors it deserves!

Murlough Bay is definitely one of my Top 5 favorite songs of ANY kind ever, and if I had to choose a number one, it has a really good chance of coming out on top.

Erotic spirituality? I think Song of Solomon fits that description pretty well...

If you were wondering if Saint Brendan's seven year voyage ever happened..

Here is an excerpt from an online article www.castletown.com/brendan.htm regarding the voyage:

More conclusive evidence of Irish exploration of North America has come to the fore in West Virginia. There, stone carvings have been discovered that have been dated between 500 and 1000 A.D. Analysis by archaeologist Dr. Robert Pyle and a leading language expert Dr. Barry Fell indicate that they are written in Old Irish using the Ogham alphabet. According to Dr. Fell, the “West Virginia Ogham texts are the oldest Ogham inscriptions from anywhere in the world. They exhibit the grammar and vocabulary of Old Irish in a manner previously unknown in such early rock-cut inscriptions in any Celtic language.” Dr. Fell goes on to speculate that, “It seems possible that the scribes that cut the West Virginia inscriptions may have been Irish missionaries in the wake of Brendan’s voyage, for these inscriptions are Christian. The early Christian symbols of piety, such as the various Chi-Rho monograms (Name of Christ) and the Dextra Dei (Right Hand of God) appear at the sites together with the Ogham texts.”

Interesting huh?

Hi David,

Do you remember a few weeks back when I emailed you about IONA? Well, FINALLY, I've purchased this CD "Beyond These Shores" along with a copy of "Journey Into the Morn". As I'm listening to the Beyond These Shores CD, I'm following through this review of yours and I find it a very entertaining and awesome experience! Thanks for being so descriptive..it makes it easier for me to place images in my mind as the music plays.

Joanne Hogg has a wonderful voice and it fits with the Celtic style music that her band plays. Treasure is stuck in my head now thank you very much! :) Have you seen any video's of IONA? I have not, but wonder now how they perform live. "Plastic buckets"? That would be interesting to see.

You probably already know how terrific this CD sounds on a good pair of headphones. I'm impressed!

Question..you've given ratings like "from 9/8 to 6/8 and back again"..what does this mean? I'm not a musician so I'm a little lost when it comes to rhythm tempo ratings (if this is a type of rating).

Burning Like Fire - Have you heard that electric guitar solo?! Oh yeah, uhmm..you've mentioned that you have..Dave is awesome!! Luuuuuuvit! More!..More!..hehe

Thanks for your references of song lyrics to biblical verses; I appreciate that.

Excellent review!

~Kim :)

My husband and I had Murlough Bay played at our wedding -- thought it was a great picture of what our love was to be like. This is one of my favorite bands out there, although I think my favorite cd was Book of Kells. I thoroughly enjoyed your opinion!!

You especially would love these guys, given what I've already gleaned of your tastes in music. It's mostly soft but definitely not predictable, and always inspiring. Glad I could turn someone else on to one of Christian music's most underappreciated bands!

Very good review! Brought me as close to listening to it as possible ... and convinced me to purchase -- I have not listened to their material (so far as I know).

Cannot wait...
