QueenLyssa's Full Review: Original Masters by Jethro Tull
Jethro Tull, the band named after a British industrialist on a manager's whim, first blasted onto the world wide scene three decades ago, offering a wild and creative alternative to the bubble gum or screaming distortion music of the day. With music that meant something but allowed the listener plenty of freedom to never take it too seriously, they quickly garnered a loyal following who still enjoy their ever-changing style today.
Original Masters is a collection of some of their most impactful hits of their first decade in rock music, a sampler plate from a menu of albums that were each unique and fresh. From beginning to end you'll be led on a journey through some of the strongest and most enduring music in rock history.
This collection of Tull hits features their complex musical arrangement and skill at building emotion with melody. This is best captured in Locomotive Breath with its piano introduction that starts classical, travels into jazz, then into blues before the full rock impact of the entire band strikes you like a rolling train, Bungle in the Jungle, a sensual delving into the urban wild life with a tapestry of rock and orchestral arrangement, and Skating Away on the Thin Ice of a New Day, which slowly adds strains of music and additional instruments to back up the beginning of acoustic guitar to bring you a crescendo of melody. Rock anthems like Aqualung, Thick As a Brick, and Too Old to Rock and Roll, Too Young to Die are balanced by Celtic-influenced ballads such as Songs From the Woods, Witch's Promise, and Minstrel in the Gallery.
Complex and rich music is hardly Tull's only appeal, though. Ian Anderson's witty poetry tickles the ear with delightful lines and thoughtful imagery. The timeless air and intelligence of his lyrics are as powerful today as they were when they were first published and well-delivered by his energetic and captivating vocals. Not so much a singer as a bard, Anderson tells a story in each song with concrete and original imagery.
For those just starting out in their Tull addiction, Original Masters provides a good starting point to sample their early evolution and variety of styles.
