jimtess's Full Review: J. Beez Wit the Remedy by Jungle Brothers
After the Jungle Brothers great first two albums, Straight Out the Jungle on Idlers Records and Done by the Forces of Nature on Warner Brothers, hip-hop fans expected something big from the JBeez for their third release. After finishing Done By in 1991, they began work on Crazy Wisdom Masters in 1992. The album featured guest co-production by Bill Laswell. The completed project was by all accounts, a wonderfully experimental album, but unfortunately Warner Brothers was not pleased with it, due to radio inaccessibility. The Jungle Brothers were forced back into the studio to fix up Crazy Wisdom Masters. JBeez Wit The remedy is the result.
There are flashes of greatness on this album, including the lead single, 40 Below Trooper, Book of Rhyme Pages, I'm in Love With Indica, heck most of this album is great. The songs are terrific, but you always wonder what could have been. Songs that were trashed have since been leaked on the Wordsound Records/Black Hoodz 10 inch vinyl release entitled "Crazy Wisdom Masters". Check for it.
The album release date was continually delayed until 1993 when it came out with little fan fare. No one noticed and the album soon found its way to mark down racks.
Despite this fact, the album is terrific. I have no idea what some these songs are about, but they sound good, they are non-traditional, but you can still dance to them.
Unfortunately, the LP packed the whole 45 minutes on to one LP, it it definitely more suited for a double LP.
I definitely recommend this album. It has been reviewed as both wonderfully experimental and deafeningly annoying. I can not compare this album to any other as it is in a complete different league. The cuts Man Made Material and Blahbudify are unlike any other on hip-hop albums you will ever hear. They are so untraditional, you will not enjoy them until you really try to. But once you have, you will unlock some of the sonic genius needed to create this album.
This album should have started a progressive movement toward more complex, eclectic beats and innovative samples. Unfortunately, it remains one of a kind.
