I honestly had never listened to BDK but I read your Top 10 Rappers of all Time thing and I saw how high you had him rated so I figured I'd check him out. I bought this CD and wow..God his punchlines are incredible..I'm definately going to get more of his stuff..That line that goes like "If a mic was a gun I'd be clint eastwood/If hip hop was a game I'd be MVP/Most valuable player on the M-I-C." Wow. I just paused it and rapped it out loud to myself like 15 times. Probably one of my top 2 favorite rappers now..BDK or Pac..

Thanks for introducing me

Granted. Prolificacy is paramount to me - rather roll with a guy who has proved himself more than the next man time and time again.

And a side note, I would rather have a real "god" than a mere mortal who was made a "god" after hanging himself like a little punk.

Ha-ha.

And Dayo, Chino XL had a classic: Here To Save You All. It's no Kane album, but it is ill.

I don't know about Chino XL's first album being a classic, but at least we both agree that it is not on the level of Kane's album.

LOL please!

I'm not taking anything away from Chino XL; he is one of the top 5 punchline rappers of all time, in my opinion. But until Chino XL can do better than release three albums (as opposed to BDK's seven) and have a classic on his hands i.e. surpass BDK's resume, I will always contend that Kane is the father and king of punchlines.

And you want to bring Shango into the mix? Please, he can take his thunderbolts and stick 'em where the sun don't shine! I got Ogun the god of war in my corner, and he wields a mighty agedengbe sword in his hand!

Heck, why do you think I call myself the Balogun?

Well I think it is because everyone can relate to pac. While KRS-ONE may claim to be the the human embodiment of hip-hop,2pac is the the human embodiment of the hood from which hip-hop originated from.He represents everything good, bad and ugly about ghetto life.I don't really understand by what you mean by definitve ,it's too vague a term.

Although he is mine top tenI just can't call him the greatest. He just recycled too many copulets and tended to rhyme the word ME or those that sound like ME (G,Hennensy, enemies,MOB,) and the double tracking of his records can once in a while get annonying.

Hip-hop blasphemy (Reply to this comment)
by raknaspac
Balogun you have committed hip-hop blasphemy you better pray so KRS-ONE can forgive you for your sins unless you will get hit by Shango. While Big Daddy may be the Father of punchlines ,Chino xl is the king of punchlines.

Multi-topical rhymes with subjects that vary//
But all relative like West Virginians before they marry - Chino XL

great review but as far as vakill no. He is an extremely ill lyricist and one of the best out now, but Chino XL would be a better argument.

Definitely check out his first two releases, Joel. The guy is the archetype of Jay-Z, I'm not kidding you.

2Pac has kind of faded with me. Yeah, he's still a great rapper to me, but I guess I have been so bogged down by his posthumous releases that it has sort of dulled my perception of him in comparison to my other favorites.

As for Kane rarely faltering, well...this is what the series is for, right?

Dayo got the yayo!

"If you dare say “Where Are They Now?” is better than “Set It Off” instead of the other way round, I have a resounding slap waiting for you." -- Dayo's gettin' his Colonel Kurtz up!

That was some of that berserker again my man. I am a proud owner of every Kane album (except Prince of Darkness, I ain't proud of owning that one hopefully you'll bash the shit outta it) and am lookin' forward to the rest of the series.

Kane = 7 albums
Gang Starr = 7 album (including Full Clip)

And I'm sure you're still gonna beat me to the finish line.

much of Kane or maybe I did & don't remember, but now since you mention that he influenced Jay-Z with his style, I should probably start listening. You got me interested! Great review man.:)

He isn't a greater punchline rapper than Kane or L, but I think he is the better punchline rapper.

???

Or you actually meant to say that Kane is a greater punchline rapper than Vakill overall, but Vakill's punchlines are of better quality than Kane's?

Ahhh, a lot less arguable. Vakill does have some really sick punchlines, I agree. I just wish he somehow manages to break out of that underground bubble; he's been rapping for quite a while now.

"I would have thrown them bows, but I thought that was ludacris [sic]!" Ha-ha, get it? Right back at ya, Kyle!

Man, I see you pushing for this Common series more frequently now. Go any further, and it just might backfire! LOL just kidding...

It just maybe the next one up (hint) after Jay-Z...

Stay tuned!

I'm talking about his punchlines. They are simply the sickesy punchlines I've ever heard. He isn't a greater punchline rapper than Kane or L, but I think he is the better punchline rapper. Whatever, that's all I will say. Peace.

...except that he isn't the king of punchlines. Vakill has overtaken the throne.

How, with two little-known albums? And where are his battle-rap benchmarks? Sorry, can't ride with that, and I know I am not the only one who feels that way. Hell, I would find Big L more acceptable. But Vakill? Uh-uh.

Thanks for stopping by, though!

Kane is the god of punchlines. Even though his lyricism isn't as complex as Ra's, he brings it with the rhymes. I'm sorta mad that "Wrath of Kane" didn't make the album, since it's my favorite Kane song. Oh well. Kane was always ill; he should drop another album.

True dat. Ain't no one taking that title away from him. And by the way, the live version of "Wrath of Kane" is in his second album.

Maybe I haven't read the liner notes thoroughly enough, but I always thought it was Kane himself singing the chorus of "The Day You're Mine". Guess I always figured that if they hired a professional vocalist, he wouldn't be so off-key!!

Yeah, I saw Andre Boothe for the songwriting credits, and I know Kane has done a little singing in his subsequent albums. But the singing in "The Day You're Mine" does not sound like Kane to me. So it is easy for me to surmise that it is Andre Boothe.

While Rakim might be the greatest MC ever, Kane will always be my favorite MC. Even his crappy records have at least one line that makes you press the rewind button and go "I can't believe he said that".

Kane is in a three-way tie with Ice Cube and Nas for my favorite emcee. And you're right - even his lesser records still have me pushing that rewind button.

Thanks for stopping by, Mike!

"Go to face me, you crossin' the line like a lowercase T!" - Snik

That's one of my own :). I love punchlines.

I have to pick this one up soon - I have no albums from Kane, and the stuff I've heard from him has impressed me. So I presume it's this, Jay-Z, and then Common? Looking forward to 'em all, man.

Peace
