NinaNee's Full Review: Aurora Gory Alice by Letters To Cleo
Aurora Gory Alice is the band Letters To Cleo's first full-length debut if you don't count their Sister CD which they rereleased. It has ten songs and only runs over a little more than 38 minutes, which is typical of the band... and of most first CDs from bands that aren't loaded with funding. This CD features the run away hit song Here & Now which was all over rock radio a few years back, but there's a lot more than that.
The first song Big Star could be called the best song on the CD. What Letters To Cleo can do very well is mix in the acoustic guitar into a beautiful song. Kay Hanley's voice is perfect in this song, and the guitar solo is very timely. I See, like the hit Here & Now, lets you hear just how very fast Kay can sing... and that is fast. So fast that most people don't understand the words and make up their own for both songs. I see is also found on I believe the Jawbreaker soundtrack. The same fastly spoken words can be found all over this album. Rim Shak is more of a guitar driven song with Kay's voice complimenting well. Wasted, Get On With It, From Under The Dust, and Come Around are all slower beautiful songs that are very enjoyable. From Under The Dust is more of a louder rock song and Step Back is the cutest little song which is acoustic and... peppy!
This Cd is a good find for people who enjoyed their latter work... such as Wholesale Meats & Fish or Go!. The Cd can be found in the New England area ususally cheaper because that's where they're from for example I got this cd for $4 new at a record store.
