guy922's Full Review: Bad Girl [Single] [Digipak] by Madonna
Poor Madonna. By 1993 she had really gone and done it this time. The "Truth Or Dare Movie", the "Sex" book, "Erotica" and of course lest we forget her less than memorable perfomance in Uri Edel's pseudo-thriller "Body Of Evidence". Her self-deprocating Letterman apperance hadn't happened yet, but she was already on a downward spiral of ending her career if she didnt turn it around and fast. Her music career still alive but had taken on more of her sexual indiscretion than it usually did in recent years and as a result, "Erotica" was not a number one album, and it did not spawn any number one singles, the highest chart peak of the singles was "Erotica" at number three.
"Bad Girl" as much as I love the song was the weakest from the "Erotica" album, peaking at number 36 on the billboard hot 100 in early 1993. That in itself should have been a tip-off for madonna that it was time for a change.
I have two versions of this single, one of them is the US issued paper case, and the other is a UK issued in a slim jewel case. Both versions have the same cover which features pictures lifted from "Sex", such as her laying in bed cupping her bosom smoking a cigarette.
The US version contains a radio edit and extended version of "Bad Girl" and includes four versions of "Fever". The radio edit is pretty much the same as the album version on "Erotica" but had a lot of excess instrmentation and music cut out to shorten the song. Nothing else that really alters it. It still includes Madonna's emotion laden vocal and the beautiful piano backing. The music is very sexy and slow. This is a great track.
The extended mix, is my favorite version of the song. Its essentially the same song, but with an extra bit of musical sections. I enjoyed this version of "Bad Girl" the most.
The four versions of "Fever" are as follows: Murk Boys Miami Mix, Extended 12", Murk Boys Deep South Mix, Hot Sweat 12". This is basically four versions of the same song, So I will not review them individually. The different versions have a few minor differences between them that make them each unique. The have each been remixed to enhance the song's appeal. That is basically what can be said about them.
The UK version in the slim jewel case features four tracks,
The "Bad Girl" radio edit, and three versions of "Erotica". The first version of "Erotica" is the Willam Orbit 12". This version includes additional lyrics amended from the album version of "Erotica", I like a few of the 'new' lyrics such as "Ill be your sourceress, your heart's magician. Im not a witch-Im a love technician." Other lyrics...inspire less hope "We could use the cage..Ive got a lot of rope. Im not full of rage-Im full of hope" is a great example of this. I like this remix though because its not as lifeless as the album version.
The last two versions of "Erotica" aren't anything special, the third, "William Orbit Dub" version is just an instrumental and "Erotica Madonna's In My Jeep Mix" is just the same basically as the album version, with a few minor differences in music.
I know for a fact the US version is still in print, so if your music store is competent at all, the may have it. The UK version is not in print and I got lucky when I snagged it from my record store, but otherwise I do see it often on ebay. As far as the UK versions are concerned however, it would be simpler to get a copy of the "Erotica" single.
Last Thoughts? Well I think "Bad Girl" is a much better single than the chart positions reflect. It is a very beautiful ballad and the remixes on both version are a plus. Its a shame that this song as well as the rest of what was "Erotica" has to be linked to other less memorable ventures from around her 1992 time period, because the music is great.
Great Music To Play While: Realizing it may be time to soften your public image and hang up the riding crop.
