angelofmusic_1's Full Review: Greatest Hits, Vol. 1 by Barry Manilow
Barry Manilow's Greatest Hits Volume 1 is the first out of a set of three. This set of three were the first CDs I ever got of Barry's. They were given to me as a gift from my fiance when I was 17. From that moment, I was hooked. Ever since, Barry has definitely been a favorite of mine.
I listened to the set straight through, Volume 1 being the first. It's not my favorite but it's still pretty good.
The songs
Mandy - This is one of Barry's more popular songs. It was his very first hit. It's a pretty ballad that he sings about a girl, Mandy, that loved him and all he did was push her away, only to realize, after she was gone, how much he really loved and needed her.
Oh Mandy, you came and you gave without taking
And I sent you away, oh Mandy...
New York City Rhythm - This song is a fast, up beat song about NYC and how the fast pace of the city can raise one's spirit.
The poundin' beat of the city streets that keeps my dreams alive
I'm lost, I'm found, I'm up, I'm down, but somehow I survive
It's got to be the New York City rhythm runnin' through my life...
Looks Like We Made It - Though the title might lead someone to believe this is a happy song, it's quite sad. In this song, two ex-lovers meet again after they worked at making new lives for themselves and finding new loves. They are afraid that now they see each other again, they might not be able to keep themselves from falling in love with each other.
Looks like we made it
Left each other on the way, to another love
Looks like we made it
Or I thought so till today
Until you were there, everywhere
And all I could taste was love, the way we made it.
Daybreak - This is one of my least favorites. The lyrics seem to me to be a little bit childish (the best word I could come up with to describe it) compared to Barry's other songs. The message of this song is basically to stop and smell the flowers.
But it's daybreak, if you wanna believe
It can be daybreak, ain't no time to grieve
Said it's daybreak, if you'll only believe
And let it shine, shine, shine
All around the world...
Can't Smile Without You - This is another one of Barry's more well known songs. He sings this song at every concert and picks a girl from the audience to sing it with him. The song talks about how unhappy he is when he is away from his lover.
You know I can't smile without you
I can't smile without you
I can't laugh and I can't sing
I'm findin' it hard, to do anything...
It's A Miracle - This song is about his life on the road, away from home and how happy he is to be back home with the woman he loves.
It's a miracle
A true, blue spectacle
The miracle is you...
Even Now - This is a really pretty song. Very slow and soft. It's about a broken relationship. Even though he is with a new girl, he can't get over his ex.
Even now, when I have come so far
I wonder where you are
I wonder why it's still so hard without you...
Bandstand Boogie - This song was written for the TV show American Bandstand hosted by Dick Clark.
We're goin' hoppin'
We're goin' hoppin' all day
When things are poppin'
The Philladelphia way
And you can drop in, on all the music they play
On the Bandstand, bandstand...
Tryin' To Get The Feeling Again - Another sad song. This one is about a man who is falling out of love with a woman and he is trying to get the love back.
And I've looked high, low
Everywhere I possibly can
But there's no tryin' to get the feeling again
It seemed to dissapear, as fast as it came...
Some Kind Of Friend - This is a fast paced song about a man who was betrayed by a girlfriend.
I never should have let get to me
Never should have let you bring me down
Didn't know that i was just some fantasy, that you found...
This album is definitely a good mix of Barry's different styles of music. Even though I only like a few of the songs, I still love the album and still recommend it because no matter how the song sounds, ALL the lyrics are great.
