the_clansman's Full Review: Kill 'Em All by Metallica
When people get asked what their favorite Metallica album is, you expect one of the usual supects- Ride the lightning, Master of Puppets, And Justice For All and even the Black Album. Their first album, Kill 'em All is the most often overlooked of their early work. A lot of people complain about the weak production of this cd..... as opposed to what, Ride the Lightning? St. Anger? Personally, I think some of the best albums ever have been horrible produced, like Bleach by Nirvana. Kill 'em all is my favorite Metallica CD, because it is their most youthful and energetic. This CD had a certain edge, and energy, that slowly dissipated with every subsequent CD, and by St. Anger had completely dissapeared. Phantom Lord, No Remorse and Hit the Lights are all good examples of this, all incredibly energetic songs. I also love the singing on this CD, which I guess a lot of people dissaprove of, I like the youthful sound of Hetfield's voice, probably because it is very refreshing after the annoying growly sound he has evolved into. This song may not be the best produced of Metallic's CDs, but it has a certain edge to it that no Metallica CD matches (it also has the best Metallica screams). I don't understand how people can say they don't like the lyrics on this album, I think this CD has their best lyrics. This is the CD that invented the thrash sound that Metallica is so praised for having.
Hit The Lights- Great opening track, love the opening drums and riff of this song. Good screaming and solos all through this song. Love the opening lyrics "No Life till Leather/ We are gonna kick some @$$ tonight/ We got the metal madness". I wish I had been alive when this CD was released, people must have been blown away hearing this song for the first time. 10/10
The Four Horsemen- This song is in a 3-way tie for my favorite Metallca song of all time (with For Whom the Bell tolls and One). The best song on this album, it truly is a classic. I love the way the drums actually sound (to me) like the hooves of horses. The lyrics are classic "Horsemen are drawing nearer/ On leather steeds they ride/ they've come to take your life/ On to the dead of night/ With the four horsemen ride/ or choose your fate and die". 11/10
Motorbreath- Another great song, love the opening drums and guitar riff, another really fast and energetic song. This song is about "living life in the fast lane" and is another example of Metallica's youthfullness at the time of this CD. 9/10
Jump in the Fire- Another classic riff to open the song, this song really rips. This is about as close to a satanic song you get from Metallica. "With hell in my eyes and with death in my veins/ The end is closing in/ Feeding on the minds of man/ and from their souls within/My disciples all shout to search you out," how can you deny the greatness of those lyrics? 10/10
Pulling Teeth- This is a weird bass solo, while showing off Cliff Burton's bass skills, it doesn't really go anywhere, probably the one misfire on this CD, but every Metallica CD has one bad song. Frayed ends of sanity on And Justice For all, The thing (song) that should not be on Master of Puppets, and Escape on Ride the lightning (its hard to choose just one from the Black Album). 5/10
Whiplash- Back to classic Metallica, I think this song is about coming to a Metallica concert, and going crazy. Awesome riffs and great singing by Hetfield, gets some good screams going on in the lyrics. "Adrenaline starts to flow/ thrashing all around/ acting like a maniac/ Whiplash!" is this song the reason why Metallica's '80s music is often referred to as "thrash"? 10/10
Phantom Lord- Always loved the opening to this song. To me this whole song has kind of a punk feel about it, I don't know why (I hardly ever listen to any punk), it just feels very raw and energetic to me. It has some great solos between the verses too, I think this CD probably has the most solos time per song of all of Metallica CDs. Great lyrics too, about a "leather army", bow down to your Leather lords. 10/10
No Remorse- This song took me awhile to really get into, but I love it now. Lyrics are a bit juvenille and cheesy at times, but there is nothing wrong with that! "No remorse No regret/ We don't care what it meant/ Another day Another Death/ Another sorrow Another breath" good anthem song, probably rocks live. 9/10
Seek and Destroy- Who doesn't know this song? One of the best, if not the best opening riffs of all time. This song really brings me back to grade 10, running around town drunk, smashing things, little hellion I was. This song is probably part of the reason we caused so much trouble back in those days, what can be said about having "Searching Seek and Destroy" playing in the back of your head while your running around drunk? Overall this is another classic Metallica song, that never gets old! 10/10
Metal Militia- "Thunder and lightning the gods take revenge/ Senseless Destruction/ Victims of fury are cowardly now/ Running for safety/ Stabbing the harlot for her sins/ Leaving the virgin" this Cd has some of the most intense lyrics Metallica ever put out. This probably has the best solos on the whole CD on it and was the first song on this CD I really loved. Loving the ending with the marching and war sounds, really brings the CD to a satisfying close. 10/10
Overall this CD is very energetic and raw, if you want to go back and see the CD that started the whole "thrash" thing, this is where you should go. This CD has my favorite lyrics of any Metallica CD, they have a theme of a "Leather army" of metalheads taking over the world, which suits it just fine, because it was the beginning of a whole new metal movement, thrash, that would soon take over the metal scene.
