jesse12's Full Review: Master of Puppets by Metallica
I was about 14 when I got this album. It was my first introduction into metal. When I first heard songs like "Master" and "The Thing that Sould not be" it was amazing. After I got this tape I ditched my "Stryper tapes". I flipped on the cassete and listened to the cool accoustical intro of "Battery", and exploded into pure state-of-the-art speed metal, like I never heard before. And to this day at thirty one years old, it still sounds just as amazing. "Master" is an absolute masterpiece. There is nothing like it. It's a long track with excelent solos and musicionship. I think the song is about cocain, but one could easily find other meanings.
Lyrics are well writen. I thought it might be about the government sending men to their deaths in battle. "The Thing that Should not be" is another favorite of mine. A slower but heavy and kick a** song with great vocal and guitar work. The vocals by James on this album are the coolest of Metallica's career. Until he started trying to hard in "And Justice for all".
"Sanatarium" is a very catchy soft song that starts out accustical and picks up into some great meaningful solos. It's about how inhumane mental institutions are, which is imprisoning and sickinging the individual as opposed to helping heal them. Leporus Messiah is another favorite on this album with powerfull kick a** riffs, and allot of good guitar work. Then their is "Orion", an instumental that proves that Metallica owns. The guitar work is emotional and it's a pleasent listen. Kirk Hammet displayes guitar work with 70's, era with a technical speed metal twist. Good stuff. "Damaged Inc." is perhaps the crazy, fastest track. And it's a killer way to close the album.
"Master of Puppets" is the true classic thrash album.
In my opinion it's their best album. They never again achieved this level of greatness. The closest was "Ride the Lightning".
Why am I writing this review? Everyone has heard of it. Everyone knows and has heard "Master". And it's well deserved. For those of you new to the metal scene, this is the perfect place to start.
