| Phibes69's Full Review: New Wave of British Heavy Metal '79 Revisited |
Satan had a child...and its name...Rock N' Roll. He was a cool, hip swiveling, doo wop kinda kid, that infected the children of the 50's with excitement and social awareness. It was the awakening of a generation that desperately needed to have a voice, to express their feelings and unify them as a whole.
Rock N' Roll slipped into its teenage phase and whispered to the following generation, of love and peace. The 60's were turbulent times of war and social upheaval. Woodstock was the ultimate display of unification among the throngs of psychedelic, drug infested youth, but Altmont was the devil's playground...casting its shadow across the summer of love and slaughtering it like a newborn calf.
Revolution was the battle cry and things got a little more interesting. Out from the British Isle, came the thunderous cacophony of "Black Sabbath", "Deep Purple", "Led Zeppelin" and Uriah Heep". The 70's droned on and Rock N' Roll was cast into the shadows...disco was the music of choice for the cocaine snorting masses. Studio 54 became their church and Rock N' Roll became the spokesman for the disillusioned once again.
Punk was vile, raw and honest in its message and attitude...and therefore, the mutation begins. Taking all it had learned and influenced, Rock N' Roll had grown another ugly head...and Heavy Metal was born. The look, style and attitude was fierce, bombastic and loud. Aggression and raw energy would be the voice of a generation that pledged total allegiance and an undying loyalty, that Rock N' Roll's predecessor's had never had.
Being the musical testament, of an era that had spawned many incredible bands and a way of life..."New Wave Of British Heavy Metal '79 Re-visited" is the cd. collection to own. Emerging from England's industrial cities, Heavy Metal became the youth's struggled voice crying out from all their desperation and foreseen miserable existence's. Destined to work in smelting factories and slaughterhouse's, the youth picked up guitars and drum sticks, forming bands and rebelled against the social norm and the downward spiraling economy. Each band possessed unique qualities and styles that made the Metal Movement inspiring and exilherating. Taking punk's "do it yourself" approach, these bands forged ahead...making demo's and constantly toured, to make their message heard. The message was heard...loud and clear!
A powerful and unique form of music, Heavy Metal is something that cannot be defined, it has to be felt and fully experienced...mind, body and soul. This collection contains the roots of a musical form that will never die. Each band on this compilation, had contributed a special facet of talent that should never be forgotten...the founders...the elder's of a generation's legacy.
30 mind numbing, nerve damaged classics, blare and pound from the speakers and rattle each and every tooth from your head. This IS Heavy Metal! Raw, satanic, sledge hammer, riff laden cacophony's, of fist pumping doom infected masterpieces. The very band's I grew up with, under the guise of the Mighty Metallica, circa 1982. Lars Ulrich compiled this metalology...paying homage to his childhood hero's...the very bands that gave Metallica life and sustenance...especially "Diamond Head". I personally attribute some of these bands as my most influential contributor's, as a fan and a musician.
A musical history lesson, "New Wave Of British Heavy Metal", introduces the young and up and coming talents of "Iron Maiden" and "Def Leppard" as well as "Samson" with vocalist supreme, "Bruce Dickinson(Bruce Bruce)". All singles or demo recording's, these are must haves' for the serious metal fan. Lar's did a wonderful job in preserving a misunderstood and misinterpreted musical art form.

Clad in leather, spikes and flowing long hair, the metal scene was dominated by the males of the human species, but these were males of the throw back kind...beer swilling, skirt chasing bad boys that needed a release...hedonism at its lowest level. Metal was their unified chant of rebellion...and God...it was so damn good. Take a trip into the past, you metalheads...you know who you are. Fierce, loud and aggressive...Metal Lives...and will never die!!! A truly incredible collection of British Metal!
CHEERS YOU LOT!
