I really don't know. Ask Russell Mills, the guy who designed the whole thing. He'll probably have something to say. It's probably in the NIN Hotline.

i remember when my brother got it as soon as it got to Dubai, which was where we were living at the time (late '94/early '95 i think). At first i had to wonder what the heck he was listening to . . . just like i did when he had brought in AIC.

After a few weeks i started getting into it, though i guess it says something that my favorite from here, and all the NIN i've heard to date, is A Warm Place—perhaps reflects my mild resistance to a lot of Reznor's self-absorbed nihilistic lyrics. Hurt is close in my favorite NIN list also. Closer i can never listen to again after hearing Weird Al's parody of it. i've always enjoyed how the songs could sneak under the radar with soft, whispery slow starts, and then suddenly explode in your face and mind, and then sometimes go back to that initial serpent menace.

i dunno if you've come across it, but the Manic Street Preacher's 1994 album The Holy Bible sounds like a good bet if you want a complementary guitar driven sound to go along with this. Songs like Archives of Pain have riffs that sound like the guitarists are picking on rusty strings and will have to amputate their fingers once they're done . . . and the lyrics sometimes sound like Reznor could've penned them ("I hurt myself to get pain out—Yes).

Nice job with your coverage of this release Steven! ...t-þoo

yeah bruh,

the tate house was actually owned by a friend of my dad's named Terry Melcher, (Dorris Day's son) who produced a lot of the Byrd's albums...Terry had actually turned down an album deal for Charlie, who decided that if he couldn't make records for terry then nobody could...the FBI came to our house when I was little to talk about the murders...sometime look in the book Helter Skelter for Mike Deasy Sr...its an interesting little tid bit

Charlie is the darkest chapter in the musical genius of 1968-70, some amazing records came out those years, and there was always an air of unforgiveness and terror amongst the studio players in L.A. during that period, the end of an era

now they all live in Nashville...

so buying the Melcher home seems to me like another marketing ploy, a good one, but just another like Ozzie, Iron Maiden, Dio - the many black dragon, demons and horse flies rockers to come down the road. The difference is Trent can really fuckin play

i just suspect sometimes that his take on the darkness of this world is what a wonderful niche market it is for a musician...polling numbers, good crowd response, good album sales...

one of the finer music reviews from this site...really, really fine

Oh yeah, I've seen pictures of that mansion it's nice. And that house that Trent recorded the album is now destroyed except for the doors which Trent kept for his new studio in New Orleans which used to be a funeral home.

If my review of Quad is half as extensive as this, I think I'll be happy. As usual, great review man.

Informative and thorough as usual, void! Wonderful work and I am, once again, in awe... :)

P.S. His house in New Orleans is pretty nice, too - huge, sprawling and dark...another wow....
