rimmer2x's Full Review: Blizzard of Ozz [Remaster] by Ozzy Osbourne
I heard my first Ozzy Osbourne song in the summer of '96, when I saw his video for 'I Just Want You' on Mtv (this was back when they actually showed videos). I liked what I heard enough to start my Ozzy collection, and I've been a huge fan ever since.
The Blizzard of Ozz debuted in the early days of metal, when it was less "heavy" and more "speed" and "thrash." The album, naturally, reflects this particular eighties style, most notably through the amazingly talented and doomed guitarist Randy Rhoads.
The album starts off with 'I Don't Know,' followed by Ozzy's flagship song, 'Crazy Train.' My favorite songs on the album, however, are 'Mr. Crowley' and 'Revelation (Mother Earth).' The latter song is a wonderful ballad, with Ozzy wailing in his signature nasal-tone voice about one of his favorite topics: man's rape of the planet. The last half of the song is purely instrumental, starting with a mournful synth melody, and finally erupting into one of the best guitar solos I've ever heard.
What's great about Ozzy is that his style doesn't change that much between albums. If you like one, chances are good that you'll like the others. True, he's gone through four guitarists now, and a greater number of bassists and drummers, but the heart of his albums is always the same: his inimitable voice, and the fresh, Beatle-esque style of his songs (I'm constantly amazed by Ozzy's vocal range and song-writing abilities - I have all of his albums, and every single one of his songs has an original, hummable melody).
Blizzard of Ozz is one of the best efforts by the undisputed King of Metal, and is among my favorite Ozzy albums (rivaled only by Ozzmosis). I recommend this album heartily not only for its content, but for its historical significance as well.
