stefanb's Full Review: Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik by Outkast
In my opinion, OutKast is the best rap group currently in hip-hop. Now that Tribe has broken up, Dre and Big Boi can throw down the flows better than any duo in the arena. In fact, I would argue that OutKast is the number one duo since maybe Eric B. and Rakim.
This is OutKast's first album, and it contains more of the unfinished, raw beats that most groups come out with on their first album. SOme of the songs on this album are some of the best rhymes combined with beats ever to come out on digital audio (cd).
Southernplayalisticcadillacmuzik is the title track (track 5), and has a great beat. This track (too long to spell it out every time I write about it) begins with a drum and a rolling bass line that makes you want to listen over and over. When the hook comes in, yeah, you'll be hooked too.
Hootie Hoo is probably the great undiscovered song on this album. This track begins with a simple progressive bass line, and then Dre comes in, representing ATL to the fullest. His rhymes that are laid down in the first 45 seconds are some of the tightest rhymes that any head should appreciate.
