sweetcece's Full Review: A Partridge Family Christmas Card by The Partridge...
Recently, I went to a huge thrift store sale and because the price was too good to be true, I purchased A Partridge Family Christmas Card at a bargain price. After listening to this album, I must tell you that unless you are totally in love with Keith Partridge (David Cassidy) and love the style of music which the Partridge Family sings on television in reruns, please do not purchase this album.
There are many reasons why I say this. Mainly, the reason why I say this is because all of the music is really too sugarcoated to be believed. The harmony is the "wooo wooo" type harmony which is associated with old Osmond Brothers albums back in the late 1960s and 1970s. Even The Cowsills who were also produced by the same producer, Wes Farrell, didn't have this type of sugarcoating as this one particular album has.
However, even if you do like the Partridge Family, I do believe that there is at least one cut on this album which everyone will absolutely hate. That one particular song is the rock Christmas carol, Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree which is one of my very favorite carols. Naturally since the original version of this song by Brenda Lee is so popular, most people expect any other version of this song to be at least similar. That's not the case in this instance. In fact, I was so ticked off at the format of the Partridge Family intrepretation of Rockin Around The Christmas Tree that I almost took the album and threw it across the room.
There's a time and a place for adaptation of music to a particular group's singing style, but in this case, that was a great mistake.
However, the rest of the selections on this album reflect the Partridge Family style without really major offending of other releases of those songs. These include: Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, My Christmas Card To You, Sleighride, Jingle Bells, White Christmas, Winter Wonderland, Frosty the Snowman, The Christmas Song, and Blue Christmas.
David Cassidy and Shirley Jones sing all of the leads in each selection accompanied by a generic vocal background, none of which is the real individuals from the Partridge Family. This is true with all of the other selections that are recorded from this group as the younger members of the Partridge Family only lipsync the recorded background vocals.
Yet, if you are a fan of the Partridge Family and especially the Keith Partridge character, you will probably enjoy A Partridge Family Christmas Card. As for me, I'll keep this album and hopefully when my grandchildren are here, I'll let them listen to this music and tell them about the good ole days when I was a kid having a crush on all of those wonderful "rock" stars of the 60s and 70s, including Donny Osmond, John Cowsill, and of course, Keith Partridge.
