Opinion Summary
Sheer Joy Permeates Every Note of this Phish-y Rift
by lambchops | Dec 02 '04
Pros: Some happy, lovely songs worth hearing.
Cons: Still doesn't capture the band's on-stage appeal.

Thank you--I hope I made it clear that I'm not a huge fan. I have a total of four or five of their albums, most of which I haven't purchased but that have been given to me. I appreciate the corrections.

First of all, good review. You don't have to be a huge Phish fan to write a good review, but be careful when talking about who's singing what. You mentioned that "My Friend My Friend" was instrumental, but only the intro is. There's a huge vocal element in that song. Also, you mentioned that TREY sings silent in the morning, but it's mainly Page that sings. I don't mean to be over-critical, but you might want to make sure the facts are there before making an honest review. Good job otherwise.

My first encounter with Phish, a few years back, was when a cute girl at an airport lent me her headphones so i could hear one of their 15-minute live songs. I thought "Hm! This is much more interesting than i would've expected!", but i didn't buy their album, although i probably would've if the girl in question had lived anywhere near me.

Since then i've heard some of their studio stuff, which i also tend to like, but what i find interesting is that their best studio work (including Rift) doesn't even _try_ to sound like their live act. I'm sorry to hear that their live album isn't a good capture of their live experience, but in that case they deserve extra-special credit for just deciding "Okay then: while we're making records, we'll be someone else for awhile, someone who knows how to make records". It's oddly humble of them, and nifty. (Excellent review, btw!)

cheers,
- Brian

You should check out their above entitled album as well. Though a big fan, I haven't picked Rift up yet. Maybe I can find it in the bargain bin. Meanwhile, check out Billy Breathes and you may change your mind as to what was Phish's best effort.

So many of my friends were big into Phish and while I never got into them I enjoyed the live shows that I saw. However, their albums just never "spoke" to me or even my die hard friends. Sure, they owned them all, but I can't ever remember them in their cars or cd players.

Bootleg tapes are another story.

Great stuff as always.
