UmmaWhat?

Written: Jun 19 '08
Pros:Excellent listen either alone or with some friends. Sit back and listen with low lights.
Cons:None.
The Bottom Line: It's a great album to be sure, but not everyone appreciates its... experimental nature.

Ah yes, Ummagumma. Released by Pink Floyd in 1969 (yes, there were albums before the dark side of the moon). A double album, one disc is a live album, the other being a studio. The studio album is supposed to be an experimental album, using even objects to be found in the home, such as a fax machine, for example. The music itself is darker than the later albums, but good none-the-less. The live album has only four songs on it, but that doesn't mean its short. The songs are 1. Astronomy Domine (8:29) 2. Careful With That Axe, Eugene (8:50) 3. Set the Controls For the Heart of the Sun (9:15) 4. A Saucerful of Secrets (12:48). The studio album has a lot of instrumental songs on it, a particular delight being 'Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together In a Cave and Grooving With a Pict' (yes, thats the name... the whole thing). Now, what a 'pict' is, I don't know, but I do know that I like this song and if you close your eyes, you just may see the furry animals grooving. Overall I enjoy listening to both discs of this album, the live and studio.
Honestly, I bought this album because of the name 'Pink Floyd' being printed on it. Giving it a thorough listening-to when I got home I was somewhat unsure of whether I like it or not. Come to find out, I did like it and now it resides with the rest of my albums, in chronological order.
What I like about the album is that I can listen to the entire thing through. Some bands you just can't do that with, but with Pink Floyd it's easy. Although part being experimental, it doesn't sound bad. It isn't like a monkey clanking on some bones with a femur...
Now, all that being said, I wouldn't recommend this to everyone. I'm sure some people would absolutely hate this album while liking other Floyd albums. Just a matter of taste. If you don't like very odd sounding songs seemingly making no sense whatsoever, then this album probably isn't for you.
