dsb15's Full Review: The Love Symbol Album [PA] by Prince & the New Pow...
After the commercial success of "Diamonds And Pearls" just a year earlier, Prince and the N.P.G. didn't waste anytime trying to capitlize on that commercial hit. What we got was an album that didn't have a title, and in my epinion, Prince's best album of the 90's. We kick things off with "My Name Is Prince". Prince was trying to make a satement with this song, he was trying to let every sucka out there know that he was Prince, the one and only, and no one was funkier or better than he(even his rival Michael Jackson, who he makes a refrence to in the song. "You must become a Prince before you're a King"). "Sexy M.F." is the reason this album has the Parental Advisory label on it. This song is funky and jazzy, but is my least favorite song on the album. Prince is much better when he uses sexual methaphors rather than being blunt. The thing that I like about this album is that it is diverse, many different styles on this record. Dance tracks("I Wanna Melt With U") pop/rock("The Morning Papers"), and ballads("Sweet Baby" and the reggae tune "Blue Light"). The smash hit from the album was "7", my favorite song on the album. The N.P.G. does a much better job on this record than they did on "Diamonds And Pearls", they sound more polished, more like a band that is united(although I could do without the rapping that's on some of the songs, Tony M. can't rap worth a darn!). This was Prince's last album before the name change("My Name Is Prince" lost it's edge after that). Although "Symbol" didn't sell as well as "Diamonds And Pearls" it is a much superior album and is sometimes overlooked. Great record.
