You're right about this being the genesis. This and two other CDs of Queen's back catalogue were released at the same time, this one, News of the World and Sheer Heart Attack I believe.

...of Somebody To Love that may have been the genesis of the remix. They did the same thing on Jazz (probably my favorite overall Queen album). I haven't seeen Queen II (my second favorite) on CD yet, but I imagine they did the same there because there was a lot of material to play with.
