fabfm's Full Review: Christmas Greetings [Remaster] by Kenny Rogers
Kenny Rogers has been in the music business for more than 50 years. It was in 1980 that he recorded this; his first Christmas album. It was such a huge hit that not only does it still sell now; but several other seasonal collections (including 1984's "Once upon a Christmas" & "The Gift" in the 1990s) have followed.
I have been a huge Kenny Rogers fan my whole life & this album has been played every Christmas I can remember!
This album features a mixture of seasonal favorites and original material. Three of the songs are in fact not strictly Christmas songs; but, certainly have a feel of the holiday and its message around them so are not out of place here. These three songs are the gospel "Sweet Little Jesus Boy" (which later, was also included on an album of inspirational songs by Kenny), "When A Child Is Born (a song originally a hit for Johnny Mathis, about peace, love and putting an end to hate) and "My Favorite Things" (original version by Julie Andrews, from the motion picture "The Sound Of Music").
Rogers gives a joyful version of the standard "White Christmas" and also sings another seasonal favorite "Carol of the bells". The new songs are just as good as the familiar. "Kentucky Home Made Christmas" is about families who have fallen on hard times, too poor to buy anything for each other at Christmas; but are still determined to enjoy the season as much as possible with God's precious eternal gift of love.
"Christmas is my favorite time of the year" is also a song about the joy and peace of the season, while "Christmas Everyday" reminds us that how much we enjoy the snow, food and gifts, Christmas has a much deeper and more important meaning.
This album remains one of the greats of the season and I shall always enjoy listening.
