'Blackout' caps off a trilogy of the Scorpions finest work. It's still rather amazing that the best material from this German rock band was released between the late 70's and early 80's. 'Blackout' is no exception. Released in 1982, this album contains some of the Scorpions most recognizable tunes.
Besides the quick riffs of the title track, this album is most noted for "No One Like You", which was in heavy FM radio rotation, and the infectious "Can't Live Without You". I have fond memories of a long road trip back from Tennessee the summer of '85 and this was the only tape we had in the van. I have no idea how many times we listened to this one but it never got old.
On 'Blackout', the Scorpions' leanings toward more radio-friendly pop metal hooks is apparent as this record was a precursor for the huge pop metal status they would attain from their follow-up album, 'Love At First Sting'. The Scorpions were noted for creating simple, catchy hooks, but unlike 'Sting', the Scorps didn't quite overkill that quality on this record. 'Blackout' just continues where their previous effort 'Animal Magnetism' left off. Another exceptional track is "Dynamite" which sums up my take on this Scorpions classic.
Along with 'Animal Magnetism' and 'Lovedrive', the other two parts of the aforementioned trilogy, 'Blackout' is essential listening for traditional heavy metal fans. I would recommend these three albums with the addition of the poignant live album, 'World Wide Live', as must-haves for all Scorpion fans and certainly fans of early 80's heavy metal.
