t-rexfreak's Full Review: Crazy World by Scorpions
One of the most overrated music releases of all time, this
album is so devoid of any original ideas the group might have had in 1990, when the miserable "Crazy World" album came out, that you actually have to squeeze the grooves of the record in order to find an original riff or solo. It may not be the "worst" album by the Scorpions, but it certainly foreshadows the infinite decline displayed on future releases like "Pure Instinct", or worse yet, the downright awful "Eye to Eye" .
The Scorpions had been major contenders in the US metal scene since 1982s breakthrough album "Blackout". They broke even newer ground with 1984s smashing "Love at First Sting", an album that contained the mega hits " Rock you like a Hurricane" and "Still Loving You" , as well as some lesser known, but equally stellar tracks, such as "Bad Boys Running Wild", "Coming Home" and "Big City Nights".
As a result, the lp broke into the top 20 and the Scorpions were on the verge of worldwide recognition (they were very well known in their native Germany since the early 70s as well as places like Japan, or the UK and Greece), having broken into the US market with 2 dynamites like the aforementioned "Blackout" and "Love at first Sting" albums, albums that may have been commercial, but did possess excellent songwriting, musicianship, and emotion, albeit commercially inclined.
Which brings me to the review section of this article,
By 1990 the band had lost its edge and nothing could be done to recapture the genuine hard rock-heavy metal feeling of their previous releases. What they did, instead was
A)Hire a competent producer in Keith Olsen. Olsen is in fact a good producer, but good as he may be , he cannot save the band from its own cesspool of mediocrity
B)Pen a socially conscious single in "Wind of Change",which dealt with the demolition of the Berlin Wall in 1989.There must be at least a dozen other songs that had dealt with the plights of the East Germans before 1990, come on, give us a break! The song, did however break into the top 20 despite some especially cheesy lyrics like "Take me from the magic of the moment, to a glory night, etc.."
C)Provide a side B which was full of bland filler, with the exception of "Send me an Angel" ,which is probably the only listenable track of the entire album. Other songs like "Money and Fame" or "Kixx after Sex" are as stupid and redundant as their title suggests. Pure filler, mixed with a genuine lack of respect for their target market's desires ( a nice acoustic number, or a commercial ditty, instead of junk like the aforementioned tracks, like the ones I mentioned ).
D)Provide a side A full of metal cliches. Whereas side B contained the worst compositions of the bands career, side A contained the most blatantly rehashed and recycled compositions of the bands career. The only salvageable track from side A is probably "Restless Nights" ,probably because of its nice riff.
Conclusion: Do not buy this album, buy some of the Scorpions earlier stuff, like "In Trance" or "Virgin
Killer" or even "Lovedrive" .It is one of the worst examples of blatant sellout, with no redeeming qualities whatsoever.Hell, itīs even worse than Iron Maiden's !
No Prayer for the Dying" that came out the same year, and it can compete with other "gems" like Ozzmosis, or "Ballbreaker" for the worst 1990's rock/metal release!
