sleestakk's Full Review: Love At First Sting (Mercury) by Scorpions
The Scorpions reached the apex of their huge success following 1984's release of 'Love At First Sting'. This German metal band took their penchant for killer hooks with pop flavorings to the next level and created a record that was enjoyed by hard rock fans worldwide. That being said, 'Sting' was almost too overdone with its anthem rock and one sickly sweet ballad.
Don't make any mistake, this is a great Scorpions record and I still love it. But where the previous three albums are bit more raw and unrefined, 'Love At First Sting' comes across more pretentious. The Scorpions offer up their catchy riffs, which are embedded in every song. Nothing's held back which I'm sure was the intention based on the tremendous success this album generated. Maybe if there were more tracks, this album wouldn't seem so overworn.
I won't even comment on the biggest hit off this disc, "Rock You Like A Hurricane", which has been drilled into the ground even to this day as many professional and sub-pro sports teams have picked it up as arena rock. "Big City Nights" was another rocker that garnered plenty of radio attention. The highlight "Coming Home" is a burner that that covers one of the Scorpions favorite topics, being on tour, which in this case the "home" in "Coming Home" is the stage.
My favorite track is "I'm Leaving You" which accentuates the Scorps flair for writing memorable and simple, yet still highly addictive, melodies. I give this album a high rating because what it meant to me at that time when I was in high school and the Scorps were one of the biggest things going. I spent many a nights jamming to 'Love At First Sting' with good friends, and hearing it now reminds me of those times.
Overall 'Love At First Sting' is great mid 80's pop metal that showcases the Scorpions hook-oriented talents even if it serves up more than extra helpings of it. While not necessarily required Scorpions listening (because I'm sure almost everyone has heard "Rock You Like A Hurricane" at least once!), this should be heard to understand why this band got to be so huge here and abroad. For a stronger take on what the Scorpions were all about, check out 'Lovedrive', 'Animal Magnetism', and 'Blackout' first. Still, this is an album that fans of mid 80's pop metal should have.
